Not Simmons' best.

I listened to Song of Kali mostly because Dan Simmons writes so well; but, I found the story to be all-to-often depressingly overwrought. As well, I don't understand why the writer includes a brutal - thankfully brief - scene regarding the main male character's past. I really don't see the point of it and it kind of threw me off the storyline. Also, I believe the baby scenario was unnecessary and added nothing to a plot already grim enough. Overall, the book is not among Simmons' best but entertaining enough (in a disturbingly morose way). However, the talented Mark Boyett does a brilliant job narrating.

excellent story telling

some parts were so scary and graphic I couldn't listen and wat at the same time

Creeping dread in the streets of Culcutta

This story weaves an ever growing and all consuming feeling of dread as it winds through the streets of Calcutta. I’m pretty sure I actually cried out during the final drama.

I am critical of the depiction of the goddess Kali as a purely evil force. It is very “western” to categorize a deity who represents the necessity of death in the cycle of life as bad. Additionally, she is known as the protector of children.

Despite these concepts being left of the narrative, I appreciated all the gritty and terrifying magic in the tail.
