#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • Discover the global phenomenon that tells an unforgettable story of love, loss, courage, and healing.

“Compellingly artful . . . [a] blockbuster memoir.”—The New Yorker (Best Books of the Year)

It was one of the most searing images of the twentieth century: two young boys, two princes, walking behind their mother’s coffin as the world watched in sorrow—and horror. As Princess Diana was laid to rest, billions wondered what Prince William and Prince Harry must be thinking and feeling—and how their lives would play out from that point on.

For Harry, this is that story at last.

Before losing his mother, twelve-year-old Prince Harry was known as the carefree one, the happy-go-lucky Spare to the more serious Heir. Grief changed everything. He struggled at school, struggled with anger, with loneliness—and, because he blamed the press for his mother’s death, he struggled to accept life in the spotlight.

At twenty-one, he joined the British Army. The discipline gave him structure, and two combat tours made him a hero at home. But he soon felt more lost than ever, suffering from post-traumatic stress and prone to crippling panic attacks. Above all, he couldn’t find true love.

Then he met Meghan. The world was swept away by the couple’s cinematic romance and rejoiced in their fairy-tale wedding. But from the beginning, Harry and Meghan were preyed upon by the press, subjected to waves of abuse, racism, and lies. Watching his wife suffer, their safety and mental health at risk, Harry saw no other way to prevent the tragedy of history repeating itself but to flee his mother country. Over the centuries, leaving the Royal Family was an act few had dared. The last to try, in fact, had been his mother. . . .

For the first time, Prince Harry tells his own story, chronicling his journey with raw, unflinching honesty. A landmark publication, Spare is full of insight, revelation, self-examination, and hard-won wisdom about the eternal power of love over grief.

Well written, kept my interest! Prince Harry’s narration is what keeps you interested and eager to hear more. I personally felt like it was a genuine story from his side of things and not theatrical.

Wonderfully written

Aside from the unnecessary process of being dragged through learning way too much about a dude and his funbits while on the guided tour of this man's journey, it's a solid and fascinating work. I just need to stress: we could have been "spared" the todger arc. I blame the editors for this more than him, though. After years of online dating, I've not yet met a grown, wealthy, anglo man who isn't enthralled with his own genitals. For such a long story, I'm also profoundly grateful my content based issues begin and end there.

Spare is probably the most honest portrayal of the toxic relationship between the Monarchy and the press that we already kind of understood but never fully unpacked. I never thought I'd feel bad for rich white dudes with land and title but here we are. If you are of the commonwealth and think it's acceptable to enable Charles and Camilla and the industry orbiting them to gain more privilege after reading this, get your head checked. I've always eye rolled at tabloids. As a film tech I've been first to grab a mirror board and lens zap a pap with a light or the sun, on set. As a Canadian struggling to buy my own 1st home, I was loud in online spaces about "not our tax dollars" for their security. Had I known about how abrupt the future "king" was in not keeping his word to his own son, I probably would have made a temporary back track to help them find their footing. All the same, having grown up parallel to the spare, I'm glad he joined the ranks of his fellow generation in doing what he had to do to make ends meet and get ahead, despite a trashfire surviving parent. LA and the book were the right call for them.

As far as literary value, the book will stand the test of time as a solid window into the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, and the pop culture zeitgeist of the Era covered: the coming of age of all millenials happened in parallel to the uniquely cloistered and privileged world of The Spare. While what we value it for now has more to do with the light shone on the inner cesspool of courtiership and its relationship with clickbait media, I feel like the story has more interesting value both as a cultural and personal commentary.

I was surprised with the care, acknowledgement, and respect given to his prior romantic relationships. You have to be an utter cynic to either completely bypass it or become a hopeless romantic to be totally on board with the all-consuming romantic love to handle the expression and depth of feeling for his love of his wife. If you've never felt it before, it's hard to believe at times but, it also drives the slow weaving of relatability to a man who is so naturally expressive from such a bizarrely unrelatable human privilege. His self awareness often saves the narrative of his perspective. Not only has he done some of the work to really understand himself and the world outside his cage, you can hear and feel the voice of the people he keeps close to himself to actively cultivate that awareness. He makes a solid case and example for the benefits of good therapeutic rapport.

As a person who lost a parent too early by surprise, the Rollercoaster of grief weaving through the story was deeply relatable. As an economic and personal choice, the book and its publicity make sense: it's reasonable to see this as a means to take his power back and provide for the family he made. Spare is brutally and rightfully damning to the next in-line to the throne. Anyone who has had the hardship of greed and bereavement cleave their family relationships into the light of day will find deep common ground in the perspective and voice he develops throughout his narrative. I can see future death care students taking this book as required ready for the nuance it demonstrates on the politics of living relatives around various deathbeds, and bizarre twists and turns that complex griefs drive through the mind.

Because of my own birthright and politics, I will always be staunchly in the eat-the-rich/abolish the Monarchy column of solidarity. Media is a part of my trade craft and as a trade unionist, while I have some mutual support of cast because they are still crew and often we work together for our mutual safety and advocacy: I rarely see actual common ground with the wealthy. Spare gives both a justification for this ideology, and a pause for consideration: it would seem that many of them are, at times, as trapped as we are. Until they're not.

Unless you are coming to this book with loyalties to the royal press core or prior alignments with those next in line to the throne, it will be very hard to leave this story with anything but support for this man, his family, and his choices. It will be interesting to see how the Monarchy spins this, and if the various commonwealth countries who get very little from the commonwealth leverage it as a means of escape.

Unexpected.
