Best so far

This is a wonderful series and with each new book released it just gets better and better. I definitely recommend starting with the first book in the series (and an extra tip: read Mick Herron's book Nobody Walks prior to reading Spook Street). You will have a much better understanding of one of the characters if you do.
This author excels at character development. You may not like the characters, but you will definitely feel like you come to know them. The plot is exciting and the pacing is spot on. I strongly recommend this series.
As always, Gerard Doyle's narration is stellar.

Daily life stops for Slow Horses

I do this to myself every time: buy the audible version and forsake my own life until I've listened to the end. Herron's Slough House series rises above ordinary thrillers, which I find formulaic and boring, by being character driven while also being as tense as they come. They're also tremendously funny. When Jackson Lamb finally shows up at Slough after a long absence, I cracked up so much that I had to listen to the scene twice.

There's just enough background so that you can enjoy this book without having read the previous three, but why would you deny yourself the pleasure?

Great Series

Great writing.

I appreciate Mr. Herron's writing style - his masterful use of words and tongue-in-cheek humor make listening to his books easy and enjoyable. Each of his books seems to improve upon the other.

Gerard Doyle is a great reader..

Herron's writing is so witty, wry.. and Doyle gives it the emphasis it merits.

Bingeworthy audio series

I'm listening to these audiobooks in order. Each story stands on its own but if you want to understand the many characters more fully, I recommend taking it in order. This book opens with a flash mob at a London shopping center interrupted by a suicide bomber. The Slow Horses, MI 5 agents shuttled aside to the unit housed in Slough House, don't "do ops" so they are not assigned to the case and they are basically twiddling their thumbs. After Slow Horse River Cartwright goes to visit his senile grandfather, a former heavy weight in MI 5, a body is found in the old man's house and the old man disappears. "The Dogs" MI 5's internal enforcement unit, calls upon Jackson Lamb to identify the body. He identifies it as River's. The "don't do ops" unit then begins investigating the disappearance of the OB, River's grandfather, leading them to uncover secrets men have died to protect.

As always, Gerard Doyle narrates multiple characters giving each a distinct voice. Mick Herron's prose is breathtakingly beautiful and sardonically funny. I'm on to book #5!

Great book in new favorite series

This guy can write! Love the characters, lots of wry humor, good plot, nice evil villain, brave, smart heroes. Would like Slough house to get more credit and Lady Di on the guillotine, but I guess that would spoil the fun and games. Love Jackson Lamb, although the occasional bath and clean clothes wouldn’t hurt. The narrator is perfect. All good

This series just gets better and better

No spoilers. Jackson Lamb continues to be the most hideous awful boss, the most hilarious, most brilliant, most devious and ultimately the most loyal and stand-up boss imaginable. Head Dog Emma Flyte is a great new addition. Looking forward to the next one.

The Slow Horses Never Dissapoint

I have waited for months for this book to appear on Audible. The dialogue is witty and fast paced and the narration is spot-on. My only regret is that I finished it in two days and will have to wait months for the next installment, but I know it will be well worth the wait.

Probably the best to date

Where does Spook Street rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

In the espionage genre, this rates very highly. The concept is a bit off the wall, but the characters go from strength to strength in each unusual story. I am not happy with some of the obscenity, but it is at least consistent with the characters.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Spook Street?

Just about every time Lamb puts in an appearance is a memorable moment.

What does Gerard Doyle bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Great pacing of the story and a real understanding of each and every character

Listening to entire series again

I am listening to the whole series again, this time in chronological order. It is clear to me now that Mick Herron and Gerard Doyle are modern masters. Listening in sequence without getting side tracked by other books is mesmerizing. I see now how Herron has a mighty philosophical underpinning to the series playing out in related plots, themes, and chatacters. That shows mighty craftsmanship. I don't mean to dampen any of the untamed fun and mayhem by pointing this out. I also newly appreciate how London and Britain are characters, similar to the way they are in Conan Doyle's Holmes opus. Outstanding at every gory, profane turn.
