À propos de cet audio

A rousing tale of espionage and unsung valor, this is the captivating true story of Vera Atkins, Great Britain's spymistress from the age of 25. With her fierce intelligence, blunt manner, personal courage, and exceptional informants, Vera ran countless missions throughout the 1930s. After rising to the leadership echelon in the Special Operations Executive (SOE), a covert intelligence agency formed by Winston Churchill, she became head of a clandestine army in World War II. Her team went deep behind enemy lines, linked up with resistance fighters, destroyed vital targets, helped Allied pilots escape capture, assassinated German soldiers, and radioed information back to London. As the biographer of her mentor in the SOE, William Stevenson was the only person Vera Atkins trusted to record her story.

The life Vera lived was amazing, her courage, savvy and intelligence was remarkable. We will never know how many lives she saved. I recommend this book to everyone young and old. It's a story that needs to be heard.

Great Heroine

The story of Vera and her selfless heroics should be shouted and replayed for generations. This book was such an enlightening and well researched account of her life.

Phenomenal

Super book that gives us a real view of what World War 2 was all about with a delightful range of characters.

Great view of great spy’s talents

The cruelty that is inflicted on one another during times of war is absolutely horrific. Although the courage of some cannot be ignored, the audacity of what was allowed to happen even among the 'good guys' for political benefit and personal advancement is sickening.

It is terrifying to know that we have not learned enough from those that have come before to prevent similar tragedies from happening again.

The book while undoubtedly well researched is so overburdened with detail that the character of Vera Akins gets lost. Every person who ever had a cup of tea with her is mentioned no matter how inconsequential that persons role.
The narration is in a soft spoken monotone that misses the intensity of the story.

This amazing woman’s story needs a new look

This isn't a story. This Might be called a biography. What this really is is a report. Short choppy sentences with the barest of information. The odd vignette sprinkled throughout for (not enough) flavor.
And it is read like a report. Nicholas Camm is monotone, emotionless. He does sound like a British reporter, but that does not keep my interest in what should be an interesting topic.
