Description

An original novel based upon the explosive new Star Trek TV series on CBS All Access.

Lieutenant Saru is a Kelpien, a member of a prey species born on a world overrun by monstrous predators...and a being who very intimately understands the nature of fear. Challenged on all sides, he is determined to surpass his origins and succeed as a Starfleet officer aboard the U.S.S. Shenzhou. But when Saru breaks protocol in order to prove himself to his crewmates, what begins as a vital rescue mission to save a vessel in distress soon escalates out of control. Forced into a command role he may not be ready for, Saru is caught between his duty and the conflicting agendas of two antagonistic alien races. To survive, he will need to seek a path of peace against all odds, and risk compromising the very ideals he has sworn to uphold....

Fear itself is a great insight into Saru' s life.

Thoroughly enjoyed this book. it have great insight into the early life of Stay and his inner struggles. It shows his character strengths and flaws and provided a setting for an inner struggle that ultimately proved his worth to his crew and the Federation

Great New Addition

Fear Itself is a great new addition to the Star Trek: Discovery book series. I enjoyed learning more about Saru and his background. It was also good to see our friends from the Shenzhou again. I also have to say that I'm really enjoying all of the new unabridged Star Trek books from all of the series that have come out recently. Please keep it up!

Great!

Third book is the best in this series yet! I'm looking forward to hopefully more books set around the crew of the Discovery.

Love the book!

Love the theme of facing the fear and overcome it! Suru is the main character not Philippa or Michael which made me a little skeptical before I started listening. But once I started, I couldn’t put it down. Love the book which is much better than drastic measures! Robert is the best narrator, ever!

WOW!

An epic adventure! would love to see it on the big screen. Reminded me of the political conflict of our nation at the moment.

It turned my 14 year old on to Star Trek

It was a little slow at first, but with the introduction of species I don't recall before, it was necessary. But, as my son said, "it REALLY picked up at the end."

Good, but nothing special

Although I liked this book, it feel it's pretty standard Trek stuff, with few new reveals about DCS or Saru and few insights overall. Still a good book which I enjoyed. 4/5

Paint by Numbers Star Trek

After reading "Star Trek: Picard: The Dark Veil" James Swallow's love for the phase "Jutting their chin" is even more apparent in "Star Trek: Discovery: Fear Itself." That aside, the actual story for Fear Itself was not terrible, however it was not great either... it simply was fine... Star Trek in the way of Paint by Numbers. Unfortunately, compared to the show that this book gets its namesake that's a massive improvement. Even though this wasn't great I find myself wishing we got a show in the vain of these books rather than what we got... But I digress, the characters are fine and many elements of this story remind me of the TOS episode "The Galileo Seven" in passing but the main conflict is the true weak point of the story. There are elements that don't match up with the show's canon but the show can't even stick with its own continuity within the span of a 50 minute episode so I am forgiving in that regard. Not sure what else to say but it did feel like a bit of a missed opportunity and there wasn't enough backstory but it wasn't terrible.

Star Trek doesn't need the Enterprise We have

Discovery
Now it's still going to use Tholiun's, (without the Tholiun web) and now I can listen to complaints about this star ship is not a constitution ship. Now it's a bucket of bolts and a mixed up timeline? I thought Captain Kirk's Enterprise was a constitutional spacecraft? I'm still not sure about the classification of Captain Picard's ship?Where do we go to now, where we thought no one needed to go there again?

I can complain about little things easily, but who will write about this new crew? Because listening to this new crew and their stories that I still need to go where I want to boldly dream I could go there to? I think while I'm working, it would be terrible if I could not listen this kind of stories again! authors have to follow an established timeline set by Gene Rotinbery (sorry spelling) and authors being limited to a timeline set! Final thought, fun to listen to, timeline was messed up!

My favorite character gets his own book!

Saru has slowly became my favorite Star Trek character and this novel really does a great service to thim.

Set way before the events of the first Star Trek: Discovery season, Saru and Michael Burnham are junior officers aboard the Shenzhou, who en route to investigate the malfunction of a probe in the neutral zone in the border with the Tholian Assembly, when they encounter a ship in distress.

Trying to be more like Michael Burnham, Saru disobeys an order and returns to the ship where he thinks he will be able to help a group of refugees but involuntarily helps the refugees to mutiny and take over the ship, while disabling the Shenzhou.

Now he must mediate along all the parties and use his empathy and unique skills to defuse a situation where thousands of lives are at stake.

Extremely recommended!

Hard to Follow

I found the audio version of this book to be somewhat hard to follow. Hearing a bit more about Saru is a great concept - but the alien species that they encounter in the story failed to capture my interest and made the book and underwhelming experience.
