Even centuries later, the final decades of the 20th century are still regarded as one of the darkest and most perilous chapters in the history of humanity. 1974 A.D.: An international consortium of the world's top scientists have conspired to create the Chrysalis Project, a top-secret experiment in human genetic engineering. The project's goal is the creation of a new super-race to take command of the entire planet.

Gary Seven, an undercover operative for an advanced alien species, is alarmed by the project's objectives; he knows too well the apocalyptic consequences of genetic manipulation. But he may already be too late. One generation of super-humans has already been conceived. Seven watches as the children of Chrysalis - in particular, a brilliant youth named Khan Noonien Singh - grow to adulthood. Can Khan's dark destiny be averted - or is Earth doomed to fight a global battle for supremacy?

..but Very, Very Good. This is predominantly a SciFi-informed espionage story. Think 'James Bond meets Dr. Who'. The connection to the Star Trek universe is tenuous at best. The central plot revolves around Gary Seven (from the 'Assignment: Earth' episode) and targets the Chrysalis project (which spawned Khan Noonien Singh), but otherwise has very little import for Gene Roddenberry's vision. Greg Cox took those elements as inspiration to craft a surprisingly entertaining story. The writing is a little cheezy and the plot is a little sophomoric, but this is a cleverly-crafted tale about secretive misanthropic eugenicists.
[NB: The 3rd Chapter of the book includes the first part of an analagous Eugenics program being pursued by Klingon and Federation interests in "Real Time", but it feels peripheral]

Anthony Stewart Head is a very good reader who truly brings the characters to life. His accents sound authentic and he exhibits great cadence and pacing. His female character voices are fairly weak, but I would listen to his work again.

If you are looking for a legitimate 'Star Trek' story, look elsewhere. But if you are happy with an honestly fun (if a bit pulpy) spy story, this 7.5/10 effort is worth the Credit - I actually wish it wasn't Abridged.

good book enjoyable to listen to more volumes. the story is interesting the beginning is a little slow but it picks up.
