One hundred years ago, 4 crewmembers of the U.S.S. Enterprise™ crossed the dimensional barrier and found a mirror image of their own universe, populated by nightmare duplicates of their shipmates. Barely able to escape with their lives, they returned, thankful that the accident which had brought them there could not be duplicated...or so they thought.

But now the scientists of that empire have found a doorway into our universe. Their plan is to destroy from within, to replace a Federation Starship with one of their own. Their victims are the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-D, who now find themselves engaged in combat against the most savage enemies they have ever encountered: themselves.

I will never forget Spock with a goatee. This non-canon Diane Duane story builds on that famous OG Star Trek episode where we met the Evil Enterprise.. introducing a thoughtful challenge for the TNG crew involving devious denizens of that mirror reality planning the destruction of the Federation Of Planets in our dimension.
The writing is capable and the plotting is loyal to the Star Trek (TM) universe.. but I found Duane's approach slightly too technical.

As to presentation: Simon & Schuster Audio did well to enlist John De Lancie ('Q' from the television series) to read the book. His professional dedication to the project is admirable - and voice modulation, incidental music, and background sound effects are applied judiciously - but De Lancie unwisely intermittently attempts impressions of fellow actors like Patrick Stewart, Brent Spiner, Jonathan Frakes, and Michael Dorn. The overall result is an "average" listening experience.

Altogether, I rate 'Star Trek: The Next Generation: The Dark Mirror' 7.5 stars out of 10. I received the audiobook as a gift and quite liked it.
If you're a fan of the TV show (as I am), you will likely enjoy this adaptation while on a long drive or something.. but don't anticipate being blown away.

[Incidentally, what a dream episode for the actors on the series: being able to play an evil version of yourself]

It was an awesome story, however, it was a bit difficult to separate and distinguish characters because of the one narrator. the narrator did a great job though.
