Description

A Pleasant Diversion

I am no "Trekkie", but I truly love Gene Rodenberry's vision of a galaxy filled with hundreds of intelligent non-human cultures contributing to an overwhelmingly ethical  Federation of Planets. Scientific advances create opportunities for the collective advantage of everyone, but also opportunities for evil from violent or aggressive species. In this story arc from John Vornholt, the Genesis device (from the Movie canon: 'Wrath of Khan' and 'Search for Spock'), has been converted into a terrifying weapon that needs to be addressed by the TNG version of the Enterprise. The plot is interesting, the dialogue is believable (although pretty silly at times), and the pacing is quite good (the Abridgement is well-done). The writing isn't great (the relationship exposition stuff is nonsensical), but I can't complain about it.

Tim Russ (Vulcan security chief Tuvok on Star Trek:Voyager) is a "fair" reader at best - he gives decent emotiveness and timbre.. but his voice acting is unspectacular (female character voices are pretty bad). Additionally, his pacing is poor (he reads too quickly - I actually had to slow the reading rate to 0.90X).
The sound editing is also a bit aggressive in this recording (music and sound effects help create a cinema-quality atmosphere, but they overwhelm the text at times)

Taken altogether, this audiobook reads like a slightly weak but entertaining Screenplay for a Star Trek: The Next Generation episode - but ends in a cliffhanger (it has no real standalone merit) and is underwhelming overall. It rates 6 stars out of 10. It's worth a Credit and a couple of hours of your time.. even if you're not a diehard.
I will be listening to Part II.
