Description

Mark Watts compiled this work from his father's extensive journals and audiotapes of famous lectures he delivered, in his later years, across the country. In three parts Alan Watts explains the basic philosophy of meditation, how individuals can practice a variety of meditations, and how inner wisdom grows naturally.

Weak

Not much in the way of content. This is more or less an Alan Watts record of a guided meditation. There are better lessons in meditation and mindfulness available nowadays.

Essential instruction for new meditators

These are clips from lectures where Alan Watts discusses the philosophy and practice of object-less meditation. He makes it easy to grasp what meditating does and does not entail. Highly recommend for beginners looking to explore a practice.

Alan Watts is a loveable, accessible genius

Would you listen to Still the Mind again? Why?

The value of this audio title rests in the fact that Watts himself is recorded. Charming, revealing and empathetic, Watts is a brilliant speaker and his approach to understanding meditation is singular.

Insightful.

Nothing can quite beat the subtle reminder that we are capable of relieving our minds when we let go. Much like muddy waters, most of our thoughts are clouded until we allow it to settle.

Alan W. Watts provides a unique way of explaining this kind of process. With a captivating voice and wise choosing of vocabulary he can show you much of what you've been missing this whole time.

One of the finest Alan Watts performances

This book really hits deep. Some key takeaways are:

-Intellectual Theologians side with God because he's the big boss in the sky, with the biggest battalions. What the hell are we supposed to do about that?

-Life is now. Right now. We are straining ourselves with a nervous, overwrought sense of self that is a misunderstanding of how we are supposed to actually be.

-the self is an illusion, thoughts that can only think about thinking are lost

-the quivering self is what we are deep down inside, and meditation brings understanding to assuage that self.

-our sense of identity doesn't take into account our hippocampus, or pineal gland, or our physical body at all

there's more gold in hear, great to hear.
another good one was that when we meditate we can observe thoughts just as if they were on the outside of ourselves. we are the watcher

A good snack for the mind

I enjoy listening to Alan Watts. Very soothing and inviting. The chapters didn't all line up in theme but were wonderful little <5 minute shorts that were like a mental snack. Comforting and intriguing listen.

Not the book. Just a lecture.

I have the book with this cover and it’s extremely well written and organized. What’s on this recording is some lecture that touches on a couple of those principles but is much more casual and they are collectively just singing together for a large portion of it. I’m gonna try to get audible to rectify this.
