Description

A collection of four chilling novels, ingeniously wrought gems of terror from the brilliantly imaginative number one New York Times best-selling author of The Fireman, Joe Hill.

"One of America's finest horror writers" (Time magazine), Joe Hill has been hailed among legendary talents such as Peter Straub, Neil Gaiman, and Jonathan Lethem. In Strange Weather, this "compelling chronicler of human nature's continual war between good and evil" (Providence Journal-Bulletin), who "pushes genre conventions to new extremes" (New York Times Book Review), deftly expose the darkness that lies just beneath the surface of everyday life.

Snapshot, performed by Wil Wheaton, is the disturbing story of a Silicon Valley adolescent who finds himself threatened by The Phoenician, a tattooed thug who possesses a Polaroid Instant Camera that erases memories snap by snap.

A young man takes to the skies to experience his first parachute jump...and winds up a castaway on an impossibly solid cloud, a Prospero's island of roiling vapor that seems animated by a mind of its own in Aloft, performed by Dennis Boutsikaris.

On a seemingly ordinary day in Boulder, Colorado, the clouds open up in a downpour of nails - splinters of bright crystal that shred the skin of anyone not safely under cover. Rain, performed by Kate Mulgrew, explores this escalating apocalyptic event as the deluge of nails spreads out across the country and around the world.

In Loaded, performed by Stephen Lang, a mall security guard in a coastal Florida town courageously stops a mass shooting and becomes a hero to the modern gun rights movement. But under the glare of the spotlights, his story begins to unravel, taking his sanity with it. When an out-of-control summer blaze approaches the town, he will reach for the gun again and embark on one last day of reckoning.

With an afterword from Joe Hill, read by the author.

Masterfully exploring classic literary themes through the prism of the supernatural, Strange Weather is a stellar collection from an artist who is "quite simply the best horror writer of our generation" (Michael Kortya).

Haunting Yet Exciting Read

Strange Weather had me gripped from the very beginning. Each story brought about new emotions, whether it was intrigue, horror, or hope. I found myself anxious for the next chance to sit an read.

Only one warning, the subject matter of one of the stories, Loaded, is very haunting and may be triggering for those who have lived through or been effected by mass shootings.

Disappointed

I was really hoping for big things from these but overall it fell short. The first book was great and I really enjoyed it. Then they got worse from there. The second was good but the third and fourth just missed the mark for me. I couldn’t wait for them to get over so I could start a new book. I think this is the only case that I can say that the movie would be better than the book.

Sheesh!..We get it Joe.

Heavy handed talking points are crowbarred into otherwise entertaining stories and very solid voice performances. All of the typical tropes and sacred cows of modern story telling are on full display.

Boring

I like Joe Hill and his Dad but man does it seem like they're struggling lately. Just on and on with no real excitement or anything scary. I kept waiting for the next sentence, paragraph then story to be good and it was painfully dull and hard to get through all of it.

Political activism concealed within rubbish

This collection contains four short stories. One was only mildly interesting. Two were boring and the fourth was totally ludicrous. Beyond the stories themselves, I was very off-put by the incessant advancement of Joe Hill's political philosophy. I'm not an extremist in any way and I suspect that Mr. Hill and I might share a good many opinions, but I didn't like having an agenda being shoved down my throat under the guise of fiction. It's a shame, because I had high hopes for this collection, having enjoyed NOS4A2 quite a lot. In the future I will scrutinize reviews more closely before spending a credit on any material written by this author. On a positive note, I thought the narrators were very good, especially Wil Wheaton and Kate Mulgrew.

good stories, but his leftist view gets old

the stories are fun to listen to. however, joe hill is obviously a leftist who hates president trump. he also makes the absurd assertion that America cares about guns more than children. of course, joe does not realise that all the gun control laws in the world will not stop a lunatic. he proves this in the story loaded.

Could not even finish it was so bad

What would have made Strange Weather better?

I have no idea, maybe not to have been written at all

Has Strange Weather turned you off from other books in this genre?

Not the genre

How did the narrator detract from the book?

slow-flat reading, no emotions.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Strange Weather?

all of them

Any additional comments?

I found myself wandering off throughout the entire book and had to keep going back.

Disappointed

Didn’t finish. It’s no Heart Shaped Box... I can do without specific references to bodily needs, wants, functions. An amazing story doesn’t need that info.

Boring, full of liberal agenda

Honestly, I tried to get into the stories. I really wanted to like them. They were just bland. Add on the unabashed liberal agenda that was pushed and it just wasn’t good. Not even kind of.

Too many politics not enough story.

I typically like Joe Hill's work and I cannot complain about the performances. Since he picked some of my favorite readers. But I feel this series of novellas was way to focused on political climates and the authors political beliefs, than the stories he was attempting to bring to life. I guess I actually need to read descriptions for his work now.

All Sizzle No Steak

All four stories begin well, with great concepts, brilliant even. And then, sadly, they crash and burn at the end. A great idea, with a flat tire ending feels like a mugging, a bait and switch. It may be a family trait -- remember the absurd ending of Under the Dome? Hundreds of pages of build-up, tension, brilliance -- and then a dumb dumb dumb ending. The readers did a great job with what they had to work with. But in the end, I was deflated.
