Surprisingly Mature

R.A. Salvatore will never find himself in the Pantheon of Fantasy greats...RR Martin, Tolkien, Jordan. His subject Matter - Dungeons & Dragons encounters - is too Juvenile. Faërun is a YA world, created by teenagers as a forum for their make-believe entertainment. As an adult, I still regularly join some friends to roll some dice, but the Forgotten Realms are a construction of gamers. Within it, Salvatore plays. His events are action-packed, exciting, and wildly entertaining. In 'Streams of Silver', Salvatore adds psychological angst, political maneuvering, prejudice, emotion, and treachery to an enjoyable Quest backbone. It's still an adolescent distraction, but it has some weight. Victor Bevine is a Professoonsl reader. This action-packed narrative fits best as part of the Icewind Dale Trilogy, leaving quite the Cliffhanger, but is worth 4.5 out of 5 stars.

Narrator's Pronunciations are Bizarre

I'm listening to this series again after reading the books years ago. Overall, the narrator is wonderful, but there is one thing that makes the vein in my temple throb every time I hear it.

The pronunciation of ravine is a soft A with the I pronounced as a hard E (rəˈvēn). Nowhere, in no dictionary, is it pronounced ravin with a soft I (or like one of the Foresaken in Wheel of Time, for those familiar). This isn't an uncommon English word, so how did it get past both the editors and producers, even if the narrator doesn't know how to pronounce it?!?

Once I get over that bucket of cold water to the face each time I hear it, I can get back into the narrative, but it always jolts me out of the story for a few minutes.

I love this story, but...

I love this story, but the narrator pronounces some words in such a way as to make me feel like I just heard nails on a chalkboard (lived for instance). Fortunately these words are few and far between. He does alter his voice slightly for different characters so that is good.

Streams of Gold

As always the narrator did an excellent job. I enjoyed this book more than I enjoyed the Crystal Shard. Unlike the first book the tempo in Streams of Silver is more balanced with more interesting dialogue between characters and the battles more descriptive and in a way more flexible. If Salvatore wrote this book immediately after the Crystal Shard he improved dramatically in his writing style.

Fun and interesting follow up.

I like this story more than I liked "The Crystal Shard". Good interplay between the characters. Good questing and discovery. Good conflicts between the main powers and interests.

The performance is good and enjoyable.

Some characters are less interesting than others. Only a few characters seem to have real depth. Other characters seem a bit forced in their loyalties and emotions. Some choices seem out of character and there are foreseeable oversights that weaken the organic nature and believability of the story progression. Takes a bit from the immersion factor.

Overall an enjoyable book, despite flaws. Definitely some gems to enjoy and capture the imagination.

Victor Bevine should be fired

I absolutely love all of Salvatore's novels, particularly his Drizzt books, but please get rid of Victor Bevine. This guy is totally clueless when it comes to pronouncing the English language and his sultry voice cannot imitate anything remotely evil or tough sounding. To the editor for failing to catch all the incorrect pronunciations, look up "macabre", and OMG, every time I hear Bevine say "short lived" I literally scream out "it's LIVED you moron" , you should be fired for not doing your job... both of you took a great book and made it stupid because of your combined ignorance

basically the last part of the Hobbit

I read a bunch of reviews and no one said anything like they didn't notice the story line is basically the finding of lonely mountain, more action packed and less dense but not as original or creative as the other stories on the series. It's good and don't let the fact it's the hobbit with a lamer dragon turn anyone away. it's pretty good.

Above average storyline.

The only reason I didn't give the narrator 5 stars is due to how you pronounce "lived". The i is said "eh", what you say is "eye". Similar words with this pronunciation: liberty, link, sim, pin, win, and so on. Everything else you're doing is honestly great! I'm enjoying the overall story arc, i'll see what's next soon!
