The Saga of Recluce was the series that first got me into audiobooks and I have listened to every book multiple times. Since 2018 I have gone through about 350 audiobooks and my expectations for this one were high. I started listening the day it came out and it was worth the wait.

The story builds slowly and near the end it reminded me of earlier books where characters were promoted up into Ciad. That connection back to the larger series made it even better as I swear I experienced déjà vu.

Modesitt continues to make the world feel new while still holding on to the deeper themes of balance, responsibility, and the cost of choices. Sub-Major’s Challenge was everything I hoped for and I am already counting down until the next one.
