An accident during the construction of a tunnel beneath the Bering Strait leads to the discovery of a network of caverns and evidence that hints at the survival of a primitive human species. I love adventure stories and this one had it in spades. It caught me from the first chapter and kept me going until the very end. I am a fan of Matthew Reilly, James Rollins, Grieg Beck and of course Clive Cussler and now Michael McBride. The narrator also really gave a great performance, highly believable and entertaining.

The first ⅓ of this Michael McBride story borrows heavily from 'Jurassic Park' and 'Congo' - with a splash of 'Airframe'. The technical aspects asserted overwhelm the story a bit, but I quite appreciated the cerebral storytelling and dedication to scientific authenticity.
Unfortunately, McBride then relies heavily on Hollow-Earth Theory, creates cookie-cutter bad guys, contemplates *several* speculative evolutionary "apex predator" variants, and embarks on at least three gore-soaked vicious creature plotlines. 'Subterrestrial' evolved from a credible Science Fiction techno thriller into a fairly silly Planet Of The Apes/Land That Time Forgot/Marvel's Ka-Zarr tale.

Reader Joel Richards doesn't help the situation, either. Don't get me wrong, Richards is a solidly professional reader - it's just that it's pretty clear that he's reading a text sitting open on his lap at times. Mr. Richards is collecting a paycheck on this project.

Altogether - despite being pretty ludicrous - this was a fun 5/10-star audiobook. It was a reasonable distraction for free, but not worth your Credit when it leaves the 'Plus' menu (it's not terrible per se, but better options beckon).

[WARNING: There's a scene in the book when a partially-naked Dian Fossey/Jane Goodall-type anthropologist narrowly avoids being gang-raped by a troop of superintelligent hairless chimpanzees.
You read that right.
She escapes by getting on her hands & knees and offering her a$$ to the Alpha Male in a gesture of sexual submission. McBride's near-foray into bestiality is honestly pretty gross]

You need to really suspend your disbelief to enjoy this one...having said that, it was ok especially since it was in the plus catalogue.

The plot, action and character development was bogged down in never-ending scientific fact. So much so that I was bored to the point of not finishing the book.
