Interesting characters and cultural context

I found Mas Arai (main character) hard to like at first but as his story is revealed along with the mystery, he becomes more understandable. I had never read a novel with a character who is a HIroshima survivor, so this was eye-opening and fascinating. Great portrayal of all the characters and the narration was first rate.
