À propos de cet audio

High heat. Low stakes. Sharp steel.

The cozy, low stakes of Legends & Lattes meets the scorching bodyguard fantasy of Jennifer L. Armentrout's From Blood and Ash in this enemies-to-lovers romance where, yes, the swords do cross.

A LitHub most anticipated book of 2024

"There's a teasing, mischievous lilt to Omari Douglas's performance that perfectly suits this delightful romance set in a fantasy world...Thanks to author Marske's vivid world-building and Douglas's charming narration, listeners will be fully immersed."—AudioFile

Mattinesh Jay, dutiful heir to his struggling family business, needs to hire an experienced swordsman to serve as best man for his arranged marriage. Sword-challenge at the ceremony could destroy all hope of restoring his family's wealth, something that Matti has been trying—and failing—to do for the past ten years.

What he can afford, unfortunately, is part-time con artist and full-time charming menace Luca Piere.

Luca, for his part, is trying to reinvent himself in a new city. All he wants to do is make some easy money and try to forget the crime he committed in his hometown. He didn't plan on being blackmailed into giving sword lessons to a chronically responsible—and inconveniently handsome—wool merchant like Matti.

However, neither Matti's business troubles nor Luca himself are quite what they seem. As the days count down to Matti's wedding, the two of them become entangled in the intrigue and sabotage that have brought Matti's house to the brink of ruin. And when Luca's secrets threaten to drive a blade through their growing alliance, both Matti and Luca will have to answer the question: how many lies are you prepared to strip away, when the truth could mean losing everything you want?

"There's nothing in fantasy or queer romance that Marske can't do."—Sarah Rees Brennan

amazing

A very satisfying listen, with just the right amount of drama and romance (and spiciness). I really appreciate the thoughtfulness that the author took with developing each character. I don't want spoil anything, so I won't say more. Great narration!!

Just right

Loving the story, but going to have to pick up a paper copy of this book. Because the narrator is not good. I thought he was going to just narrate at first. Maybe give the two characters different inflections to at least be able to tell when one character is speaking. And it sounded like he did try that. Only he would just stop doing that halfway through a chapter and just talk normally. Or the character voices would shift. At one point while the two main characters were talking. Luca started sounding like Matti and then the narrator started talking normally and I got so confused.

If I thought I could return the audio book for a refund just because I thought the reading was bad, I would.

I really wanted to like this story. I love gays, and swords, and rivalries, which are all aspects this book offers, but so far I’m finding the book sorely lacking and struggling to finish it. (Chapter 14, there will be spoilers in this review)

The characters and their knowledge within their world feels great. I love the interactions between the characters, especially the sister and Matti. The world itself felt like it needed to be fleshed out a little more, but you learn enough that it’s believable, and there’s some fun ideas like having a “best man” to duel if your marriage is challenged.

The big issues emerge through the conflict, specifically through Matti. He’s a strong character who deeply values his family and business, but whenever Luca is present, she stops thinking about anything that matters to him in a serious capacity. He’s attracted to Luca immediately and forgives him for nearly ruining his life, and then he becomes an affair while Matti is engaged to a remarkable woman. Matti makes it seem like the things in his life matter by essentially resisting his lust, but continues to chose Luca, even going so far as to pick a wedding colour that would compliment him twoish days after meeting him. The relationship between them feels so rushed and Matti repeatedly choosing Luca feels unjustified and heretical to his characterization.

Now if I had to predict what’s going to happen now that they are sleeping together on Matti’s pre-wedding celebration, things with his fiancée will fall through, we may even learn she’s been colluding to take down his house somehow, Matti will end up with Luca whose miraculous wit and detective work have managed to save the house name so marrying her isn’t necessary. The only thing I can think of that would redeem this story for me is if the sister and fiancée end up together

Oh and the voice acting is good, but nothing special.
