Description

Fans of Matched, Across the Universe, and The Hunger Games will love this captivating tale of rebellion and romance that spans parallel worlds.

Everything repeats. You. your best friend. Every person you know. Many worlds, many lives - infinite possibilities. Welcome to the multiverse.

Sixteen-year-old Sasha Lawson has only ever known one small, ordinary life. When she was young, she loved her grandfather's stories of parallel worlds, inhabited by girls who looked like her but led totally different lives. Sasha never believed such worlds were real - until now, when she finds herself thrust into one against her will.

To prevent imminent war, Sasha must slip into the life of an alternate version of herself, a princess who has vanished on the eve of her arranged marriage. If Sasha succeeds in fooling everyone, she will be returned home; if she fails, she'll be trapped in another girl's life forever. As time runs out, Sasha finds herself torn between two worlds, two lives, and two young men vying for her love - one who knows her secret, and one who believes she's someone she's not.

Clever 'Multiverse' Plot. Terrible Execution.

The YA conventions render this story a little bit formulaic, but Anna Jarzab injects enough of the original to maintain interest. On Earth, 'Sasha Lawson' is an ordinary, introverted bookish misfit High School girl from Chicago with a heart-of-gold and a crush on gorgeous classmate 'Grant'.
Meanwhile, her "analogue" - a doppelganger 'Princess Julianna' (living in a parallel United States on a Planet named Aurora) - yearns for freedom from the unfair responsibilities of a member of the Royal Family.. all the while defying a group of Terrorists that are trying to overthrow the crown.
The obligatory Aurora love-interest, Grant's analogue 'Thomas Mayhew', is an impossibly handsome, brave, dangerously skilled Secret Agent/Royal Guard that kidnaps Sasha so that she can take the place of the Princess in an arranged marriage meant to ward off war. The 'Prince Callum' is - of course - sweet, funny, and blessed with moviestar looks.. allowing Jarzab to fashion a realistic (if a bit cookie-cutter) angtsy Love Triangle.
Yes, the plot is as clichéd as it sounds (comparisons to Suzanne Collins's "Hunger Games" are ridiculous).. but it's oddly captivating.

Unfortunately, descriptions are weak, the characters are as typecast as you might fear, the dialogue is sophomoric, and there is enough implausibility that it's hard to set aside reservations and simply enjoy the story. My eyes rolled annoyingly frequently.

Reader Amanda Dolan does her best to elevate the audiobook: displaying spot-on diction, timbre, cadence, and voice-acting.. and an amazingly interested and emotive tone (given the stilted text she has to work with).. but she can't save it.

[Note: Despite some imperfections in the narration, if you are given a choice between a text version and this Blackstone Audio recording, take this one 6 days a week and twice on Sunday.]

Altogether, 'Tandem' rates 3 stars out of 10. I didn't feel horrible spending my time on it (it was a 'Plus' option, after all).. but - needless to say - I won't be continuing with the series. Feel free to give it a try (it didn't grab me but it might do so for you), but if Audible asks for a Credit, save it for something else.
