À propos de cet audio
In Teaching to Transgress, Bell Hooks - writer, teacher, and insurgent black intellectual - writes about a new kind of education, education as the practice of freedom. Teaching students to "transgress" against racial, sexual, and class boundaries in order to achieve the gift of freedom is, for Hooks, the teacher's most important goal.
Bell Hooks speakes to the heart of education today: how can we rethink teaching practices in the age of multiculturalism? What do we do about teachers who do not want to teach, and students who do not want to learn? How should we deal with racism and sexism in the classroom?
Full of passion and politics, Teaching to Transgress combines a practical knowledge of the classroom with a deeply felt connection to the world of emotions and feelings. This is the rare book about teachers and students that dares to raise questions about eros and rage, grief and reconciliation, and the future of teaching itself.
"To educate is the practice of freedom," writes Bell Hooks, "is a way of teaching anyone can learn." Teaching to Transgress is the record of one gifted teacher's struggle to make classrooms work.

For most of Jen Sookfong Lee's life, pop culture was an escape from family tragedy and a means of fitting in with the larger culture around her. Anne of Green Gables promised her that, despite losing her father at the age of twelve, one day she might still have the loving family of her dreams. Princess Diana was proof that maybe there was more to being a good girl after all. And yet as Jen grew up, she began to recognize the ways in which pop culture was not made for someone like her.

There is one question Canadians have asked Jody Wilson-Raybould more than any other: What can I do to help advance reconciliation? This has been true from her time as a leader of British Columbia’s First Nations, as a Member of Parliament, as Minister of Justice and Attorney General, within business communities, and when having conversations with people. Whether speaking as individuals, communities, organizations, or governments, people want to take concrete and tangible action that will make real change. They just need to know how to get started, or to take the next step.

A must read for every teacher at every level
Beautifully written, perfectly narrated. This is a must read for everyone. I’ve always been fairly scared of branching into critical theory as I do not have a social sciences background. But this is both an easy read + and easy listen, with examples from her own experiences as both an educator and a learner. Her “passion of remembrance” brings so much heart to this text.

Powerful and thought provoking
This is an excellent read. Truly though provoking and challenging. Bell Hooks truly embodies what teaching and learning needs to be especially in our current context of continuous change. Teaching to transgression is empowering and necessary to open up spaces for debate and critical consciousness. Thank you.

Teaching to Transgress
Bell hooks words and ideas for pedagogy are authentic and practical for application in the classroom. Teaching to transgress is bringing the mind and body to emerge in the subject matter while engaging students in the class as intellectual beings regardless of class, race sex or gender.
