A true crime memoir: When Misty was six years old, her family started to live and dress like the Amish. Misty and her sister were kept as slaves on a mountain ranch where they were subjected to almost complete isolation, sexual abuse, and extreme physical violence. Their stepfather kept a loaded rifle by the door at all times to make sure the young girls were too terrified to try to escape. They also knew that no rescue would ever come because only a couple of people even knew they existed and did not know them well enough to care.
Amish sexual abuse: When Misty reached her teens, her parents feared she and her sister would escape and took them to an Amish community where they were adopted and became baptized members. Misty was devastated to once again find herself in a world of fear, animal cruelty, and sexual abuse. Going to the police was severely frowned upon. A few years later, Misty was sexually assaulted by the bishop. As Misty recalls, "Amish sexual abusers are only shunned by the church for six weeks, a punishment that never seems to work. After I was assaulted by the bishop I knew I had to get help and one freezing morning in early March I made a dash for a tiny police station in rural Minnesota. After reporting the bishop I left the Amish and found myself plummeted into the strange modern world with only a second-grade education and no ID or social security card. To all abuse survivors out there, please be encouraged, the cycle of abuse can be broken. Today, I am a nursing student working towards my master's degree and a child abuse awareness activist. This is my story."

fantastic audible
this is an incredible memoir and was read by an incredible woman! I feel horrible for what Misty had endured her entire childhood and I commend her on her bravery! one of the best memoirs I have ever heard!

A powerful tragic story of a strong woman
I began listening to this story in interest of doing a podcast on the author.
I can not begin to describe how moved and absolutely in awe of this amazing woman and her story. My hope and wishes for this author and story is that every single law enforcement office has a copy and it's passed from person to person to read up and understand the scope of this tangled web.
I wish love, light, healing, and positivity to all those who are affected within the pages of this book and the community.

Eye Opening
Thank you to the author for having the courage to write your story. I'm sorry you had to endure such abuse, with no help from authorities, the people who are supposed to serve and protect. Your story, while sad is truly inspirational. You have proven that you can accomplish anything.
I definitely recommend this book.

Couldn’t put it down
When I read books like this I realize I live in a bubble. This was a good reminder to ask hard questions and not to believe the picture that some families paint when put in public.

Hidden
No matter how well things are hidden each of us no matter the faith, religion or man made rules we will all stand before God and He will be the ultimate judge.
This is an amazing writer and I thank her for the heart she had given to help others. Well done good and faithful servant.

Really well done
Very interesting and well presented. I do wish that every chapter didn't start with a quote and that the end was summerized in a more condensed fashion. I understand the need for the author to stress the importance of reporting and being heard, but it loses some of it's power being repeated over and over again.

Wow, just WOW!
This book as amazing. It was a new one for me, reading about the Amish. The characters were so well developed and the story re-tellling was amazing.
Truly a brillent memoire of a hottible story.

Just wow... she’s so brave!
Her story touched me in a way I haven’t seen coming. I listen to a lot of memoirs on this app and other difficult live stories but this one is really something.
It was well edited. You don’t hear too much too hard things but you can easily imagine that it was 100 times more awful then what is heard.
I had to deal with two different Amish community in my life and I alway had a weird feeling when I was there.
This woman is a strong one. If I had the chance to meet her one day I would give her a big hug for her courage.
The narration is wonderful.
