Description

The internationally recognized teacher, speaker, and New York Times best-selling author of A Return to Love argues that our desire to avoid pain is actually detrimental to our lives, disconnecting us from our deepest emotions and preventing true healing and spiritual transcendence.

Marianne Williamson is a best-selling author, a world-renowned teacher, and one of the most important spiritual voices of our time. In Tears to Triumph, she argues that we - as a culture and as individuals - have learned to avoid facing pain. By doing so we are neglecting the spiritual work of healing.

Instead of allowing ourselves to embrace our hurt, we numb it, medicate it, dismiss it, or otherwise divert our attention so that we never have to face it. In refusing to acknowledge our suffering, we actually prolong it and deny ourselves the opportunity for profound wisdom - ultimately limiting our personal growth and opportunity for enlightenment. Frozen by denial, we are left standing in the breach. Whole industries profit from this immobility, and while they have grown rich, we have become spiritually poorer.

As Marianne makes clear, true healing and transcendence can come only when we finally face our pain and wrestle with what it has to teach us. Written with warm compassion and profound wisdom, Tears to Triumph offers us a powerful way forward through the pain, to a deeper awareness of our feelings, our lives, and our true selves.

Read with caution

There are quite a few things that resonated with me when I began to read this book, but around the 2nd or 3rd chapter, when the author discusses the prescription of anti-depressants I was pretty horrified. Although she mentions that there is sometimes cause for their use (as if she is an authority on when someone should or should not use them) in general she believes depression is a spiritual issue that needs to be approached and treated as such. I do not take issue with her stance on the possible involvement of spiritual work, but her clear bias against their use is dangerous and irresponsible. Many of the people reading her work may be in a very vulnerable place, and we live in a world where there is still a strong stigma against discussing and seeking help for mental health issues. Many people have a lot of guilt and shame about seeking the help they need, and the last thing they need in a desperate time is someone adding to that. People are dying of depression every day and the use of anti-depressants is literally a life or death choice for many. When you have a platform like this author does, and with little knowledge or training on the subject, much more care should be taken with this sensitive subject matter. Talking about the benefits of seeking spiritual guidance either with or without the use of pharmaceuticals (as decided by the individual and doctor) would have been a much more responsible and ethical approach. Imagine saying something like that to someone with schizophrenia or bipolar disorder? Depressed individuals should be treated with the same care. I hope that if you are reading this in a difficult time, you find your way to getting the help you need
