It was great to pulled out of the day to day shenanigans of American politics and the COVID tragedy and think about a better future. Fareed Zakaria’s is able to provide a positive big picture perspective and hope for the future.

This well-researched book provides a fascinating discussion of the state of the world in the middle of 2020. Its premise is that the current pandemic will accelerate pre-existing global trends and it proceeds accordingly to discuss these in significant detail. It centres on the United States but soundly integrates current information from around the world as well as historical references, in some cases all the way from Antiquity.

Once through, however, many may find it difficult to remember the so-called ten “lessons” that were promised. Here, they are, word for word:

1. Buckle up.
2. What matters is not the quantity of government but the quality.
3. Markets are not enough.
4. People should listen to the experts _ and experts should listen to the people.
5. Life is digital.
6. Aristotle was right _ we are social animals.
7. Inequality will get worse.
8. Globalization is not dead.
9. The world is becoming bipolar.
10. Sometimes, the greatest realists are the idealists.

Patently, many of these are not “lessons” since they do not in any way flow from the pandemic and have little to do with preventing a new one or better managing it. In fact, health issues are not developed significantly in the book. Thus, its title is wildly misleading, and it could have been more appropriately called “Where the World is Headed After the Pandemic”. Whether or not this deception was a conscious marketing choice, many readers will feel manipulated and disgruntled, despite the worth of what is actually presented.
