Description

From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Big Summer and “undisputed boss of the beach read” (The New York Times) comes another timely and deliciously twisty novel of intrigue, secrets, and the transformative power of female friendship.

Daisy Shoemaker can’t sleep. With a thriving cooking business, full schedule of volunteer work, and a beautiful home in the Philadelphia suburbs, she should be content. But her teenage daughter can be a handful, her husband can be distant, her work can feel trivial, and she has lots of acquaintances, but no real friends. Still, Daisy knows she’s got it good. So why is she up all night?

While Daisy tries to identify the root of her dissatisfaction, she’s also receiving misdirected emails meant for a woman named Diana Starling, whose email address is just one punctuation mark away from her own. While Daisy’s driving carpools, Diana is chairing meetings. While Daisy’s making dinner, Diana’s making plans to reorganize corporations. Diana’s glamorous, sophisticated, single-lady life is miles away from Daisy’s simpler existence. When an apology leads to an invitation, the two women meet and become friends. But, as they get closer, we learn that their connection was not completely accidental. Who IS this other woman, and what does she want with Daisy?

From the manicured Main Line of Philadelphia to the wild landscape of the Outer Cape, written with Jennifer Weiner’s signature wit and sharp observations, That Summer is a “compelling, nuanced novel” (Maureen Corrigan, The Washington Post) about surviving our pasts, confronting our futures, and the sustaining bonds of friendship.

Can’t put down

I have read every book written by Jennifer Weiner and this has to be one of her best books! So well written that I listened to it every chance I had. I highly recommend it.

LOVE SUTTON FOSTER!!

I was really looking forward to Ms. Weiner’s latest offering but it fell a bit flat for me. Very sensitive material (which to be fair, could’ve pushed me over the edge with the state of the world and all, thus skewing my review!) and it wasn’t what I was expecting. Taking the subject matter out of it, I felt like the story was a bit lazy and repetitive - not as sharp as some of her other novels. Having Sutton Foster read was pure joy, and what kept me from giving up half way through.

mixed feeling

I have read many of Jennifer Weiner's books, this one was engaging but a bit darker then most of her books, I found at times it was hard to follow, I kept thinking i missed something possibly reading in a novel it would have seem clearer that this was the intent but I think in the audible book sometimes that intent gets missed, All the being said stick with it.

Worth the credit

This was an excellent book. Kept me interested right to the end. Relevant topic in today’s society. Narrator was great.

Poorly written, poor choice of performer.

Ugh. Did not finish. It reads like it was written by someone who REALLY wanted to write a newspaper column about food but also really wanted to write a novel with some gut-wrenching drama. This book missed the boat on both fronts. The characters were just not very likeable or relatable. And the storyline was pretty unrealistic. It was about twice as long as it needed to be, partly because of the aforementioned constant references to food. It's really jarring when you are reading a very emotionally draining chapter that is constantly interspersed with Julia Child type of descriptions of every meal that the characters have. Just weird!

As for the performance: Sutton Foster has a lovely voice and reads well, but her style is better suited to light romances or children's books. It was disconcerting to hear the gut wrenching parts of this book read in a sweet, docile, sing-song voice.
