Joe De Sena has spent his life running toward challenge and discomfort. Why? Because how we react to challenging situations defines us and our families. The only tools we have as humans to survive the many peaks and valleys of a full life are preparedness, health, leadership, and most importantly, resilience. Why do so many parents struggle to finish things we start, delay gratification, and protect our health - and why do our kids continue to struggle in every facet of life? Because we haven’t showed them a path to resilience, and we haven’t fought for it ourselves.

Great if you have a teenager!
I have a 13 year old son and this book really opens your eyes and shows you examples on how to go about situations in a loving way. It’s obviously easier said then done but it’s good to go back on. It won’t change over night but this book can help see how to love your teens in their love languages and help see things in their perspective. Now to apply what I’ve learned, it won’t be easy.

My world just opened up
I am so glad that I purchased this book. I have a 13 year old boy and I’m a single mom doing it all on my own. I know that there are going to be some difficult times ahead, and I honestly feel like this will be my workbook for the next 7 years. Gary Chapman explains teenagers so well and really makes you think about yourself and how you parent. I have some work to do, but I’m not as scared anymore. I just purchased a hard copy so that I can refer to it regularly. #Audible1

Stopped listening after the second chapter.
There are some serious Christian and conservative overtones in this book. For example, in the first chapter, the author notes that the happiest people in life are those who have accepted Jesus into their hearts. One of the evils of today's society, meanwhile, is the fact that teenagers "are confronted with gay and lesbian sex and told it's ok". Finally, sexually active teenagers are described as regretful, ashamed, and "used", and the author references "perverted sexual acts" as one of the many vices that teens are wont to get involved in without a strong, loving parental presence in their life. I'm assuming, based on the general vibes, that perverted sexual acts include everything other than (or maybe even included) heteronormative PIV sex.
Oh, also, one of the flaws of today's society is that Judeo-Christian morals aren't the bedrock of society, and that morals are now perceived to be secular. That's where it's all going wrong.
This book is probably incredibly helpful for some people... but frankly, I'm a little horrified.
