Description

Discover the songwriting technique used in 97% of all hit songs

How to use subtle psychological triggers to captivate any audience.

Writing pop, rock, R&B, or hip-hop has never been easier or more fun.

Master the art of writing addicting songs

Music is a tough industry to break into. With production gear being affordable for the first time in history, it seems like everyone is making music these days. Getting noticed in the continuous stream of information that is the Internet seems almost impossible.

But: There is a technique designed specifically to captivate and hook an audience and with The Addiction Formula, you can learn it in a couple of hours. You will learn all about lyric-less storytelling, a technique used by the most successful songwriters of our time. If you've always wanted to know how to write songs that stick out and speak to a large audience, this is the book for you.

The songwriting book for a new generation of songwriters

The 60s are over! Songwriting today is a very different experience than it was when the Beatles were on the air. By combining arrangement, harmony, melody, rhythm, lyrics and production in one deviously simple technique it is the first songwriting book that speaks to an all-writing, all-producing DIY generation.

Includes over 317 techniques you will be able to use instantly

Part two of The Addiction Formula is almost like a dictionary of hit songwriting techniques. All the tools are hand-picked from hit songs of the past 30 years. But this book is far more than just a list of tips and tricks: The Addiction Formula also shows you how the techniques can be applied to your songs. It puts all of what you learn into perspective and shows you how they all fit together.

With 331 examples including songs by Rihanna, Katy Perry, Drake and Maroon 5

Are you sick and tired of being taught techniques based on some old country song you've never heard of? One of my guidelines for writing this book was to only include hit songs from the past 30 years.

Every single technique in The Addiction Formula is proven with one or more examples to show it in action and to help you learn it quickly and easy. I mean, hey, you get to learn by listening to the songs you listen to anyways! It's fun, quick, and practical.

Great book for producers and songwriters

I’ve been producing for more than 15 years and all the things I’d instinctively do now I understand how and why I do, and I’ve learned many more technics I’ve never thought about.

A must to any serious producer and songwriters.

The book is direct to the point and well structure, some examples I don’t love and agree but overall it did a good job explaining the concepts.

If you’re looking for a blueprint for structuring your musical ideas, this is your book.

food for thought

There are some good ideas in this book but it fails to connect with the listener in an objective way. I may have to listen again simply because many of the descriptions did not illicit a visualization. Overall, a fine perspective on arrangement.

I’m a successful producer for Sony, and this STILL upped my game.

I’m no Maxx Martin, if you look me up, you’ll find just a few video games, commercials and selfies.

But I am working full-time on music writing with rockstars as well as around two dozen up and coming artists in the SF/Bay Area.

You’d think I wouldn’t need a book like this, but I’m always looking to up my production/writing skill.

This book definitely delivered, making much of what I already do systematic and efficient.

Best three hours ever. (Well nine, really. I keep listening to it over and over to damn near memorize it.)

Great stuff. I wish I had this when I was first starting out!

Scam. This guy doesn't even have any songs.

I don't mean to be so negative, but i don't understand how this guy has a bestselling songwriting book, yet you can't find a single song he has written anywhere online. Like if he's telling all these people buying his book they can write a hit song you'd think he'd have like at least one notable song. The only thing i found is a soundcloud that has a bunch of 30 second samples on it. And tbh, they all sound like garbage. I don't doubt this guy understands music really well, and can explain music well, but i don't think he's a good songwriter. If you google his name all that comes up are the books he's written, not any songs he's written. And if what he says in this book actually worked he would've written some "addictive" songs himself. The only reason this book is selling well is because he's good at pointing out common sense music stuff and giving it a long explanation filled with music jargen, while at the same time keeping it simple enough making someone who doesn't know much about music feel like a genius. I just think he's selling snake oil. If you go on his YouTube channel you'll see he's since written another book which is the most patronizing thing i've ever seen. It's pretty much a to do list/coloring book for adults. And now he's asking for money for a music card game that also looks like a get rich quick scheme. It just seems like he's trying to make a quick buck, though i have admire the effort he puts into these hairbrained schemes.. I think this book is good for giving you a temporary self esteem boost that'll last you about a month. After that you'll realize you and the author don't have any songs.

Not for educated musicians

This is a guide to overall form/structure, tempo considerations, density and texture issues in layering music, et. al. for music producers only. Actual composers, please stay away. You will not get much insight on melodic construction, harmonic diversity (yep, stuck with the same basic six chords, no modulation/chromatic alteration/modal alteration let alone doubling/spacing considerations)... definitely not much insight on borrowing audio samples from new and interesting sources or thinking outside the box... it's formulaic and the formula falls into the categories of DUH and MEH. Yes, if you are an absolute beginner and you don't have ear instincts, then yes this will help your sucky song suck LESS. But if you are an actual musician with decent training and understand form basics, you will be wasting your time.

In short, this is a book about the frosting... definitely not the cake. This is not a book about the DNA of a true "standard" that will stand the test of time, but rather a formula for making a bad song palatable.

From a traditional songwriter's perspective...

If you're not into production, this won't be as useful. At least that's what I found. I'm not some old timer either, but I do write on guitar. I do extreme basic recording, although have experienced with the bells and whistles. As the author (eventually) says himself late in the first half of the book, he feels modern songwriters should be decent at producing too. And since this is how he feels, he obviously also feels producing can be songwriting (deserving songwriting credit), as he gives examples of "songwriting" that are all production examples... which I realize is an (unfortunate) occurrence of the songwriter age we're living in further leaving songwriters with less and less of a sliver of the pie. Maybe this is a 5-star book for the songwriters who prefer electronic music or the traditional songwriters who are also (separately) competent in production. It wasn't for me. Nothing new. Providing a new metaphor by comparing songwriting to addiction isn't some insightful idea.

Great Approach

I enjoyed this although in some areas, it got a bit technical for me as a new producer. It's also tricky with audio books to not have diagrams and pictures that would normally be included in a hardcopy. However they do have it available online which was cool.

Overall this was a good read/listen and I will be applying the tips to my work.

Awesome!

The written version of this book is already great, a clássic. But listening to a songwriting book makes even more sense.

Game changing

I stumbled across the holistic songwriting videos on YouTube that led me to the book. Such great information and insight given hear that if you are a fledgling Songwriter or professional songwriter, you need to get this book and give it a listen. Then, once you’ve done that. Put all of the tricks into use and you’ll be amazed at how much better your song become. Since I’ve come across a holistic approach, I’ve got two songs on hold with my publisher!

Excellent!

really enjoyed this book. although like the author says it's a tool you have to listen to regularly to get familiar with the terms and put it to practice.
