Description

In the second installment of this richly imagined fantasy adventure series, a new threat from within the Library could destroy those who depend upon it the most.

The Library of the Unwritten in Hell was saved from total devastation, but hundreds of potential books were destroyed. Former librarian Claire and Brevity the muse feel the loss of those stories and are trying to adjust to their new roles within the Arcane Wing and Library, respectively. But when the remains of those books begin to leak a strange ink, Claire realizes that the Library has kept secrets from Hell - and from its own librarians.

Claire and Brevity are immediately at odds in their approach to the ink, and the potential power that it represents has not gone unnoticed. When a representative from the Muses Corps arrives at the Library to advise Brevity, the angel Rami and the erstwhile Hero hunt for answers in other realms. The true nature of the ink could fundamentally alter the afterlife for good or ill, but it entirely depends on who is left to hold the pen.

Disappointing

I'm hoping my discontent with this book is due to my mood and the switch of narrator. Between Claire's bitterness and guilt, the disconnect between her and Brevity, Hero and Romy running off to do their own thing while Brevity and her friend do the same and Claire tries to go it alone, this book just didn't feel as good as the first in the series. The first book was about everybody coming together for a common goal and this one largely felt like everyone falling apart before they found a solution, rather than building on the connections formed in the first book. Maybe when I get around to re-reading it, I'll feel differently, but for now it was a very easy book to put down.

interesting sequel

Story: Mostly an interesting book, and I really like the concept of the series. If you liked the first book, you'll probably like this one.

Performance: The catalyst/antagonist/"devil on Brevity's shoulder" type character is frustrating enough as written, but you add in the voice chosen and the constant use of "sis" and it took everything in me not to fast forward through her parts. The muse voices in general were hard to distinguish and dear lord some of the accents were...distracting.

Character development: the only character that really developed in any significant way was Hero but it was a nice arc for him so I'm happy with that.
