..if so, this series is ideal for kids 8-12. It's a bit too mature for little ones and a bit too peurile for teenagers - but Eoin Colfer develops a nice mix of fantasy/faërie whimsy and modern scenarios that aspire to gritty reality. This second installment in a brilliant kids' series has Artemis Fowl (criminal child mastermind) team up with his erstwhile mythical creature enemies (the delightful LEPRecon Law Enforcement squad) to simultaneously investigate a Goblin Syndicate and attempt to find Artemis' kidnapped father.
The text is clever, well-paced, and clear.. Colfer is a creditable writer.. and filled with humor and sardonic dialogue. It may be a kids' book, but it's not painful for adult listeners (I am in my 50s and thoroughly enjoyed this book). The introduction of the villain too early was a mistake, but Colfer is forgiven - he's guilty of few in this one.

Nathaniel Parker: Pacing, timbre, and cadence are unparalleled and accents/voice-acting are flawless. Yes, he reads action scenes too quickly and breathlessly, but Parker turns in a straight-up brilliant reading performance.

In toto, this audiobook is worthy of 9 stars out of 10. It is perfectly fashioned for it's audience (if your kids are old enough to recognize that, say, Santa isn't real - but still kids - they will love this stuff: "I'm reading about Crime! I feel like a Grown-up!").

A beloved book ruined by a performer who for some reason needed to distinguish characters by using exaggerated and unnecessary accents. In what can only be called blazing idiocy coated racism, the performer uses an offensive and horrifying stereotype affected accent for Opal Koboi, complete with 'w' for 'r'.
Absolutely awful, the worst reading performance I've encountered.
