Opulent doesn't begin to describe the Arizona getaway where Lowell Thurman, his wife Rachel, and their three young sons have come for one glorious week. Everything at The Reata is perfect - although Rachel is a bit unnerved by the openly lustful gaze of one of the gardeners, something she doesn't mention to Lowell. Nor does he tell her about the frightening sensation he has in the pool of hands clutching at him, trying to pull him under.

When the going gets tough, go unbelievable.
As with some other Bentley Little productions there are a handful of cameos by "grossly overweight", "morbidly obese" and outright "fat" characters that do nothing for the story other than to be present for the sake of calling them out and taking pot-shots at. Yeah, I'm a little sensitive about that. No reason.
This one seems to follow a general formula used in other books I've listened to by this author. The story is slow, methodical and nicely built up, and then drags on until the reader loses consciousness.
The narrator is really good at portraying the emotions and variety of characters. My goodness though, at 125% playback speed, the reading still sounds slow. At regular speed, it is unbearable. This is easily fixed by speeding it up.
I know it's easy to nit-pick someone else's work, but there is no fix for the dreadful story. If you can only read or listen to one book this year, don't waste your time here. I've enjoyed a few by this author, but I think the novelty of his style has run its course with me.

Boring beyond belief
I'm a patient reader/listener. I prefer my horror atmospheric and slow to build, think M.R. James or H.P. Lovecraft. This is not slow to build, it's glacial. Rather than filling that time building a rich tapestry, this is just mundane detail after mundane, everyday detail with very little progression in the story.
Incredibly for such a poor book, the narration is top notch. The narrator puts the type of effort into distinct voices for various characters I associate with the best in the business.

if you love Bentley Little, you will love The Association. In my opinion, not as good as The Store, but very very good.

Extreme. even by Bentley Little standards.
Pretty seriously sick in some places. Not bad, but be ready for some very extreme descriptions of sadistic horror and human suffering.

ridiculous, but still scary
The author flew past believability with Stumpy, but it was still a good read. I think everyone has a distrust of homeowners associations, or anyone telling them what the can and can't do on their own property. This book takes that theme to a scary extreme.

Bentley Little does it again
the book started out very slowly, but then it picks up speed and doesn't slow down. As with all Bentley Little books, nothing is explained but maybe thats part of the magic. The narrator isn't that great, but on some of the more horror filled parts hes a perfect fit.

Narrator is good just not for this book
I had a difficult time remembering that the main couple were not elderly. when specific references reminded me that they were actually a younger couple ready to start a family, it would change my view of situations. The narrator wasn't bad, he just sounded much older than the anyone was meant to be. it's a great story and would have been so much more enjoyable if the right narrator had been chosen.
