Disturbing volume difference

I was definitely skeptical when I got a couple chapters in and realized this was a fantasy instead of Quinn's usual historical fiction genre, and I remember early on feeling disappointed, as I realized what I thought this book would be. However, I was pleasantly surprised and loved the book.
Quinn's authors notes at the end ALWAYS make me love her books even more, and her note this time mentions why she branched off into fantasy which was a nice addition. I like how she mentioned the true life world of libraries being under attack from funding cuts and book-banning types, and some important points about why libraries are soo important still.
I loved all the references to authors and books.

It wasn’t bad — it was just… okay. And coming from authors I associate with such rich, immersive storytelling, “okay” felt like a letdown. For example- the transition into the library world felt too easily accepted by the characters, which made it harder for me to fully invest in it. I may sound a bit pouty, but I think my reaction simply comes from high expectations built on how much I’ve loved their earlier novels.
