Description

Kiera Cass brings another sparkling romance to a stunning conclusion in this sequel to the instant number one New York Times best seller The Betrothed, performed by Jasika Nicole (Fringe, The Good Doctor, Alice Isn’t Dead).

Can you follow your heart when it’s already broken?

After fleeing Coroa and leaving the memory of her beloved Silas behind, Hollis is unsteadily adjusting to life in Isolte. The Eastoffe family’s affection is a balm on her weary spirit, though Etan, a surly cousin with a deep distaste for Coroans, threatens to upset the uneasy peace she’s found.

While tensions at home ratchet up, disquiet in the kingdom of Isolte is reaching a fever pitch. The Eastoffes may have the power to unseat a tyrannical king - but only with Hollis’ help. Can a girl who’s lost it all put the fate of her adopted homeland over the secret longings of her heart?

Great ending!

With twists and turns all along the way, this book was impossible to put down. I love the ending and will be storing this with my romance favorites.

Deus ex Machina

I like happy endings, but all of Hollis's problems in this book were solved way to easily. They were faced with two psychotic kings (which the rest of the world saw as impossible to overthrow and had been struggling against for years) and yet Hollis had no trouble at all. It was as if she had dranken the "Liquid Luck" potion from Harry Potter and nothing could go wrong for her in this book.

Hollis's character felt like she had a childlike, simplistic, outlook on the world (in spite of the tragedy she faced in the last book). Because of her surface understanding of the world around her, she sometimes acted foolishly, but it worked out for her anyway. It was as if the readers were supposed to believe her decisions were smart because they worked out, but instead she just came across as unbelievably lucky.

Yet the book was pleasant, with an easy happy ending. So, if you need that out of a book right now, this is the one.

Nice piece of escape or summer reading

Personally feel you should read Betrothed first, but probably won’t stop your enjoyment.

A young adult fantasy and romance in an imaginary historical period with plenty of complications and adventure. Well narrated.

Good but predictable

This was a sweet love story but the big plot twists were pretty predictable.

story is solid

The narrator's voice took me a bit to get past, but the story is solid and her talent did shine thru

Ugh 😩, I knew this was going to happen.

Hollis went through a traumatic, character defining experience at the end of the first book, but when we get to this one, it’s like it never happened. There are no lasting effects or consequences for anything. Why care when it doesn’t matter? 🤷‍♂️

The pacing is atrocious. I was hoping that Kiera Cass had moved beyond the “instant romance” trope of YA. But no, relationship development goes as far as, “you like the color red? So do I! We must be soulmates.”

Outside of all the bad storytelling, there’s not a lot to say here, other than it’s boring.

It’s hard to sum-up what happened in this book because it didn’t feel like anything actually happened. I mean obviously stuff happened, but it didn’t seem like there was any real progress made (kind of like when a politician is asked a debate question, they’re talking but they’re not actually saying anything).

Difficult to say without a third book, but this felt like a stopgap entry that could ultimately be skipped. I don’t know if there is a third book planned, but I think this series would greatly benefit from one.

Lastly, the worst part is this line at the end of the book:
“It is surprisingly easy to teach people not to hate.”
Um… have you met people? 🤦‍♂️

Fairy tale

I always enjoy a lite read now and then. A happy ending makes it all the better.
