À propos de cet audio

A novel in The L.A. Quartet. Murder, mayhem and dirty cops on the make against the backdrop of anti-communist hysteria in L.A. in 1950.

It’s Los Angeles in the new year of 1950. The Communist Scare is heating up. Gangsters vie for control of the town. The Hollywood studios are feuding with the unions. Then a dead body with its eyes gouged out turns up.

The investigating officer, Sheriff’s deputy Danny Upshaw, is obsessed with the murder case that no one else cares about. LAPD Lieutenant Mal Considine jumps onto the Red Scare bandwagon to advance his career and gain custody of his adopted son. And Buzz Meeks is in it all for the money.

The three cops get caught in the city’s web of ambition, perversion, and deceit. All three have purchased tickets to a nightmare.

Enjoyed the story but Craig Wasson’s narration was the worst. Odd pauses in the middle of continuous sentences, bizarre inflections as if the narrator was acting out the scene which, frankly, was sad. Did anyone attempt to edit the useless pauses out? The writing was gritty and brought you to 1950 LA. The narration distracted the listener from getting a sense of the novel because it was so god awful.

Good Story Sad Narration

The story is engaging, the atmosphere and time period are excellently portrayed. The performance is good and his voice work makes it clear who is talking which is important with so many characters

One of the best in the genre

I've heard good things about The Big Nowhere, and after having listened to The Black Dalhlia on another platform, I wanted to give this a listen.

Unfortunately this version of the book is annoyingly censored, which takes you out out of the world, and Craig Wasson's performance leaves something to be desired.

Some characters are portrayed well, however women and some male characters come off as whiney and immature, even when they aren't supposed to.

I don't think I'll be finishing this one.

Censored Annoying to listen to
