Description
On her 29th birthday, Valency Stirling awakens to a life that she knows will never change. Under the thumb of an autocratic mother and a poor relation in a large domineering family, for years her only refuge has been in her dreams of a mystical Blue Castle, where beauty and kindness reign.

Pleasant surprise
As a devoted unabashed LM Montgomery fan, I was searching for another of her books, and because I’d never heard of this book, and the other I’d never heard of — the Story Girl — didn’t have the same flair, I didn’t have the highest hopes. I was so happy to find a solid protagonist that I could relate to, as an adult. This is a hidden gem.

Fantastic comfort read!!
What struck me most about this story is how incredibly well it has aged. I never would have dreamed I could read a one hundred year old romance novel and find it so incredibly relatable. The main character's inner dialogue felt very relevant to the kinds of thoughts and struggles I have as a woman in 2023. She is intelligent and witty and lives somewhere between being stolidly pragmatic and hopelessly romantic. Watching Valancy journey from a timid creature that apologises for everything to a fierce spirit who takes no prisoners is endlessly satisfying and enjoyable.
Ms. Hancock's reading of this wonderful story was sublime; her voice and narration style were the perfect fit. I have literally listened to this dozens of times since I've bought it, I love to listen to it when I unwind and cook supper. Absolutely recommend!!
