I felt like the author lost steam, here, kind of phoned it in. I'm glad that the disappeared mother subplot has been concluded. Actually, I thought that this seemed like the end of the series, but apparently there's another book out. Despite my ambivalence, I'll pick it up. The girlfriend's dark past subplot still needs wrapping up, too.
My only other comment is, wow, do I ever get annoyed by righteous indignation, and there's a lot of that, here. Both the girlfriend and the freeloaders brother lay into the protagonist in classic displays of righteous indignation and I felt my hackles rise. I'm sorry, you're not the good guys, here, you're bit the aggrieved. All three of you are selfish, sad sack, sanctimonious d-bags. Yes, even the girlfriend. She proves that women can be, too. Uuurgh.
Also, is it just me or does the girlfriend have absolutely no personality apart from that? Like, she occasionally calls out the protagonist on his behavior and storms off. And she has a mysterious past involving spousal abuse. And that's it. Even her work with animals amounts to nothing much. She's basically just there to get the hero to rethink his actions, and that's it.
Yeah, look, I had high hopes for this series, but honestly, it's just barely ok. It's not bad, or anything, it's just... nothing special.
