Instead of being merely the receiver of the parents' psychological and spiritual legacy, children function as ushers of the parents' development. Parents unwittingly pass on an inheritance of psychological pain and emotional shallowness. To handle the behavior that results, traditional books on parenting abound with clever techniques for control and quick fixes for dysfunction. In Dr. Shefali Tsabary's conscious approach to parenting, however, children serve as mirrors of their parents' forgotten self.

Many of us know we're putting too much pressure on our kids - and on ourselves - but how do we get off this crazy train? We want our children to succeed, to be their best, and to do their best, but what if they are not on board? A few years ago, Ned Johnson and Bill Stixrud started noticing the same problem from different angles: even high-performing kids were coming to them acutely stressed and lacking any real motivation. Many complained that they had no real control over their lives.

Over the past several years, Dr. Becky Kennedy—known to her followers as “Dr. Becky”—has been sparking a parenting revolution. Millions of parents, tired of following advice that either doesn’t work or simply doesn’t feel good, have embraced Dr. Becky’s empowering and effective approach, a model that prioritizes connecting with our kids over correcting them. Parents have long been sold a model of childrearing that simply doesn’t work. From reward charts to time outs, many popular parenting approaches are based on shaping behavior, not raising humans.

We can not raise a happy child if we are constantly screaming threats at them. No parent sets out to hurt their child, but this type of parenting does just that. To raise a happy child that wants to behave, you need to retrain yourself first. You need to change the way you think and react to their behavior. You need to understand your triggers and heal yourself. Only then you can begin to heal your relationship with your children.

We may not realize it, but children are hyperaware of money. They have scores of questions about its nuances that parents often don't answer, or know how to answer well. But for Ron Lieber, a personal finance columnist and father, good parenting means talking about money with our kids much more often. When parents avoid these conversations, they lose a tremendous opportunity—not just to model important financial behaviors, but also to imprint lessons about what their family cares about most.

Cringy voices
Overall there’s a lot of good info here but a couple annoying things.
When she does the kid voice, I want to crash my car into a building. So terrible.
When she talks about sleep training being harmful she lays it on so think and repeats the same message over and over. Say your peace and give us advice on what to do about it and how to repair if we have done that.

it's a gentle parenting book
I loved listening to this book, I got a lot of really good ideas from it and I feel a lot more comfortable as a parent now. I feel like I have more understanding when my toddler is behaving "inconveniently". I did think it was going to be a little bit different though, it is a very well written book about gentle parenting.

Best Parenting Book
I’ve listened to many parenting books, over a dozen at this point, and this one is the by far the best. Read by the author, the book offers brilliant insight into how our actions and circumstances of our own childhood influence how we parent and outlines some pitfalls many of us never notice we have. A MUST read book for both new and experienced parents, in my opinion.

Absolutely READ THIS BOOK
I found this book so helpful, it has so much wisdom and is very relatable, and insightful. The author has so much sensitivity towards both parents and children.. Very easy and enjoyable to listen to. I feel it’s really helpful for parents or caregivers to understand where our own behaviours and reactions might be coming from as well. Very touching stories and insights into child and caregiver relationships and supporting our children’s healthy emotional and mental development. Amazing for parents to be, parents of babies/ toddlers and older/ teen or even adult children. Helps me understand my own parents as well. Will be listening again and again for sure. Very grateful for this book.
