À propos de cet audio

Horror is what Dan Law enjoys. He loves to read horror novels as a way to escape from his teaching job, from his loneliness, from the everyday dullness of life in Silver Lake. That’s what Dan lives for. When a new bookstore opens in town, every visitor receives a free book of their own. A book that tells their own personal story...a story they have to follow to the brutal end. As Silver Lake’s population descends into violent savagery, Dan finds he is no longer living for horror novels - he’s living inside one.

This David Haynes book is partly an homage to Horror Literature aficionados. Well-read readers will recognize reference after reference to giants in the spine-chiller pantheon & their works (modern mainstays like King.. but also legends like Poe, Lovecraft, and M.R. James). The plot is basically Hollywood Screenplay-quality at best but very satisfying.
An evil immortal Demon (named 'Castevet'.. yes, like the head cultist in Ira Levin's 'Rosemary's Baby') opens a bookshop in a sleepy rural American town and gives away personalized cursed tomes to the citizens.. folios that tap into their deepest desires and drive them to rape, murder, and mutilate their neighbors - feeding the souls of their victims to the monster.
The book requires some suspension of disbelief - there are a lot of holes in the largely unoriginal plot - and the characters are caricaturish.. but the gritty realism of the dialogue and mind's-eye vivid description make 'The Bookshop From Hell' enjoyably cinematic.

As to presentation: reader Jeff Harding overdoes it with cartoonish voice-acting, but his professional diction/timbre/cadence and admirably interested tone largely make up for the deficiencies.
In toto, QUEST Audio/W.F. Howes cast this project "passably".

I rate this gore-infused well-paced rollercoaster-ride "scary" story 8 stars out of 10. It was a great find on the 'Plus' menu.. even worth a Credit to any Horror fan willing to sink into the right mindset. Can recommend.

Fun B-Movie Fare

I enjoyed the pace and the narration. A good read, and I liked the ending, even if not a dream ending.

it was fascinating

I like the author, his books are somewhat formulaic, yet each has its own story that is worth A read or listen. A good vacation book.

Soft Horror, an "easy read"

there's a lot of pulpy horror out there that requires the characters to be to be exceptionally dumb to keep the plot going but this one also requires the same of the reader.

Above the lack of originality and overtly lazy writing the author even manages to mix up thier characters names at one point. Was free with Audible and I still feel ripped off

The scariest thing is the author is still out there...writing.

After patiently trying to really get into this book for 2 incredibly long and tedious hours, I just couldn’t do it anymore. The writing and narration are both bad, there’re no hooks and twists of the plot, it just drags and drags. It’s not even good to use as a background noise.

Incredibly boring
