Seven years ago, six-year-old Maisie Earnshaw was found facedown in a duck pond, her body mutilated. Isabel - at age 14, found covered in Maisie's blood - was convicted of murder. As Leah spends time with Isabel, she comes to know her as a young woman with a sweet, gentle nature, someone she could never see as a murderer. Leah begins to suspect members of the Fielding family of framing Isabel as a young girl, and she's not the only one. True crime blogger James Gorden thinks Isabel is innocent, too.

A production company wants to make a movie about Isabel Fielding’s life, but Leah knows this is a huge mistake. When the actress cast to play Leah is found murdered, she’s proven right in the grisliest of ways. It seems like a straightforward case: the deadliest ever female serial killer escaped prison a few hours before the murder. But Leah’s son Tom is first on the scene and Seb, Leah’s boyfriend, isn’t convinced by Tom’s innocent act. Even Leah must admit she doesn’t really know her son after he disappeared for months without contact.

Fran's instincts tell her something is very wrong. Why does Esther keep running away from home, and how did she get that bruise on her leg?

Ce que les critiques en disent
Brilliantly narrated and kept my interest and carried you along the storyline with ease and interest.
Even though I agreed with the previous reviews that the author could have ended this book with more time and not so abruptly. I like to have everything nicely wrapped up and it didn’t seem like this did.
Epilogue was good however. It helped a great deal to put things in perspective and I guess you have to draw your own conclusion.
Even though I expected more it concluded well.
Great Diabolical Plot!!!

Bit of a let down

I found the story quite far fetched, for lack of a better term. I can tolerate quite a few literary ideas that require a bit of imagination and suspension of disbelief however, I feel that the author took too many liberties in this book.
I also really disliked the ending! First, I felt like it wrapped everything up too quickly. I was shocked to hear the narrator say "epilogue". I felt there were still lots to the story that could have been told. Secondly, I felt i was left with too many questìons and presume the author wants the reader to decide some of these for themselves, but for me, I dislike this.
Not a book for me!

not totally gripping but loved it anyway

As to presentation: Reader Alison Larkin is enthusiastic and professional.. but her soprano timbre and uncomfortably crisp-nasal cadence make it sound like the book is being read by an 8-year-old at times. Her performance is creditable, mind you, but got irritating after a while. I recommend listening to the sample before you download it - Larkin's narration may be too annoying for you.
Altogether, I rate 'The Broken Ones' 4.5 stars out of 10. It wasn't a crazy waste of time, but not worth a Credit should it leave the 'Plus' menu.
