À propos de cet audio

Brought to you by Penguin.

This Penguin Classic is performed by Luke Thompson, best known for his role in the hit Netflix drama Bridgerton. This definitive recording includes an introduction by David McDuff.

The murder of brutal landowner Fyodor Karamazov changes the lives of his sons irrevocably: Mitya, the sensualist, whose bitter rivalry with his father immediately places him under suspicion for parricide; Ivan, the intellectual, driven to breakdown; the spiritual Alyosha, who tries to heal the family's rifts; and the shadowy figure of their bastard half-brother, Smerdyakov. Dostoyevsky's dark masterwork evokes a world where the lines between innocence and corruption, good and evil, blur and everyone's faith in humanity is tested.

Translated with an introduction and notes by David McDuff.

I don't usually write reviews but I had to because this audiobook was total perfection. Not only is the story of Brothers Karamazov utterly compelling, but I can't say enough good things about Luke Thompson's narration - he does so wonderfully with various voices, and he has such a bright and lively energy. The narrator will make or break an audiobook for me and this listening experience was one of my very favourites - it felt like the perfect marriage of narrator and story. I would listen to all 43 hours again! The book itself was absolutely wonderful: such a rich exploration of deep moral and spiritual themes, and imbued with such empathy and love for humanity. I felt for each brother deeply, but was especially moved by Alyosha. I'll be adding this book to my list of all-time favourites.

perfection!

Within the writing of all male authors there is the absence of the feminine, or if present, it is used as a mere romantic or sexual vessel in a narrators patriarchal perspective. In this Dostoyevsky is no different but makes no claims to be. He sews the flaw into the fabric of his literary world and in doing so birthed Mitya <3.

To Ivan: your self hatred for your own intellect manifests itself as the Devil, I understand.

and of course alyosha the holy fool is dostoyevsky’s favourite !

Ivan, my favourite

I am very happy with the speaker as there are many characters in this book and he does a good job distinguishing them.
