For the first time as an Orbit special edition, Brent Weeks's blockbuster novella Perfect Shadow tells the origin story of the Night Angel trilogy's most enigmatic character: Durzo Blint. Gaelan Starfire is a farmer, happy to be a husband and a father; a careful, quiet, simple man. He's also an immortal, peerless in the arts of war. Over the centuries, he's worn many faces to hide his gift, but he is a man ill-fit for obscurity, and all too often he's become a hero, his very names passing into legend.

For a thousand years the ash fell and no flowers bloomed. For a thousand years the Skaa slaved in misery and lived in fear. For a thousand years the Lord Ruler, the "Sliver of Infinity," reigned with absolute power and ultimate terror, divinely invincible. Then, when hope was so long lost that not even its memory remained, a terribly scarred, heart-broken half-Skaa rediscovered it in the depths of the Lord Ruler's most hellish prison.

It has been 20 years since the end of the war. The dictatorial Augurs, once thought of almost as gods, were overthrown and wiped out during the conflict, their much-feared powers mysteriously failing them. Those who had ruled under them, men and women with a lesser ability known as the Gift, avoided the Augurs' fate only by submitting themselves to the rebellion's Four Tenets.

Disappointing end to an amazing series
Brent Weeks crafted a beautiful magical universe and really great characters. The first 4 books were epic, thrilling and had detailed, entertaining plot. The small flaws in them didn't detract. Until book 5. There were details that we learned that helped us understand the whole story especially to understand what Andross had been up to all these decades of scheming. However, the plot and conclusion in The Burning White are just filled with deus ex machinas. The intricate and awesome magic system stopped having limitations and many characters ended up doing just ridiculous magical solutions. It got very religious and Gavin's change at the end wasn't satisfying. More frustrating than all of this was the numerous illogical choices and conversations. No way people stop in the middle of battle or during a major time-crunch to discuss theology and emotions. One time one of the Mighty said something like "we don't have much time but..." and then the whole Mighty team discussed something around logic/theology/emotions when they did not have time for it and no one would ever talk about things like that even after the battle.
Why did no one know the big secret Teia learned from Iron Fist after she came back for help at the end? Why did Karris stop Teia from chasing Cruxer to have a lengthy conversation to give her the weapon Kip made her? Karris could have tossed it to Teia as she ran and said "from Kip!" Like seriously! The weapons name could have been etched in it.
The book is stock full of moments like these where I couldn't believe how illogical character's reactions were to situations they have trained all their lives to handle.
The best writing throughout all 5 books is how Brent managed Kip and Andross' conversations and 9 king card games and their canniving against each other. That does impress me.
The Night Angel Trilogy was amazing and had an almost great ending. Light Bringer series was building up to be a masterpiece however this final book really does ruin it. It's not just a bit off the mark, it's completely different from the first 4 books. Characters used to strive and scheme and use their wit to succeed but now they can just power up and do something more amazing than earlier for no apparent reason. Except for Teia. Until the tooth solution, Teia's struggle and absolutely unexpected ingenuitive success was very entertaining. Then the deus ex machina of her tooth having poison in it... yeah uh huh why would she have ever thought it more likely to save her later than it was to kill her? Zero logic there. This book is more like fan fiction than what I would have expected from Brent. I used to recommend this series but now I cannot.

Terrible ending to a very good series
I very much enjoyed the early and mid-parts of this series, even though it did feel like there might have been a bit of retconning on the authors part as the story progressed. But in my opinion the final book fell very flat and didn't pay things off well at all.

Enjoyable all the way through
I love well fleshed out magic systems and this series had everything I wanted in one. Simon Vance did a great job narrating and the story was engaging. My sole criticism comes from the weirdly slapped in teenage coming of age romance subplot of "the fat guy getting the sexy woman and being pinned after by another" really just felt icky to me and it wasn't really resolved in this last book. thankfully it is a small part of an otherwise good story!

One of the best series I read this decade
Overall a great series for flintlock fantasy fans! The ending of some arcs in the final portion was a little lack lustre but that is fine.
I have never felt more invested in a book series than I did the final 10 hours/during the rising action of this book.
Weeks had crafted an enthralling world with this series, warts and all.

Perfect Story Book ending
Reminds me of the last battle in the Narnia Series.
You’ll enjoy this book like you e enjoyed the rest of the series. If you haven’t done so, read the night Angel trilogy if you liked this book.

Every Character but 2 gets a Deus ex machina
No seriously every storyline but Cruxer and Teia have dues ex machina's to solve their story. The latter half of the book might as well be a series of short stories about god showing up solving the problem and making it all right in the end.
Not to mention that it feels like an entire book and a half was skipped over as this had to be the last one. There are a ton of things included in this that lack set up and madsive portions of the story that would have been taken slow in earlier books are brushed over in this one. The pasing of the books suddenly at this book. It really feels like the writer was told or decided that this had to be the last one in the series and so they ended it before they were ready.
