Description

Ditching the stuffy hang-ups and benighted sexual traditionalism of the past is an unambiguously positive thing. The sexual revolution has liberated us to enjoy a heady mixture of erotic freedom and personal autonomy. Right?

Wrong, argues Louise Perry in her provocative new book. Although it would be neither possible nor desirable to turn the clock back to a world of pre-60s sexual mores, she argues that the amoral libertinism and callous disenchantment of liberal feminism and our contemporary hypersexualised culture represent more loss than gain. The main winners from a world of rough sex, hook-up culture, and ubiquitous porn–where anything goes and only consent matters–are a tiny minority of high-status men, not the women forced to accommodate the excesses of male lust. While dispensing sage advice to the generations paying the price for these excesses, she makes a passionate case for a new sexual culture built around dignity, virtue, and restraint.

This counter-cultural polemic from one of the most exciting young voices in contemporary feminism should be listened to by all men and women uneasy about the mindless orthodoxies of our ultra-liberal era.

A must read for all women

A well written, well-thought-out, and research supported opinion. Have we been freed or fooled?

Thorough analysis of past and present culture

I listened to the author on several podcasts and decided to find this book. This book approaches the issues of modern hookup culture from a rational feminist perspective, and goes into history of popular culture spanning the last century. There are some references to the work of David Buss, who is another author worth reading for those who find evolutionary psychology interesting.

Too often the books in this area can be overly pessimistic but nonetheless cathartic (Douglas Murray as an example), so it was pleasantly surprising to hear the objective and optimistic views expressed by the author. Towards the end of the book are several anecdotes followed by the author's genuine actionable solutions.

I look forward to reading more from Louise Perry. Her points were well articulated, and the structure of the book was clear.

I guess I am a post liberal feminist :)

As a millennial, I've grown up amidst the wave of "sexual empowerment," finding a sense of liberation from the patriarchal norms ingrained in my Middle Eastern upbringing. While I didn't personally experience many of the negative effects outlined in this book, I witnessed friends struggle to find true empowerment, often realizing that it was the men who were reaping the benefits. It wasn't until I encountered the notion of "polygamy" as a progressive idea that I began to question the true nature of this so-called liberation, seeing parallels with the patriarchal structures of my cultural background.

Delving deeper into the tenets of liberal feminism today, I couldn't ignore the glaring contradictions that seemed to disregard the best interests of women. Despite my aversion to conservative ideals, I found myself grappling with the limitations of liberal feminism. Reading this book was a pivotal moment for me, helping me define my own brand of feminism—one that acknowledges the realities of biology and seeks solutions to level the playing field for women. Henceforth, I proudly identify as a "post-liberal" feminist.

The only aspect of the book that left me wanting more was the exploration of the biological underpinnings behind many women's inclination towards masochistic BDSM. While the author does acknowledge the role of porn in shaping these desires, I felt that the biological aspect was somewhat overlooked. It's hinted at, but not thoroughly addressed.

If I were to offer my honest rating of this book, it would have been a solid 4 out of 5. However, in light of the all-too-common occurrence of biased 1 out of 5 reviews driven more by entrenched ideology than the actual content of the book, I've opted to give it a perfect 5 out of 5.

Beautifully written and compelling arguments

I listened to this book over 2 days and found it smooth to follow, exceptionally well narrated by the author, and a compelling listen. I was very moved by many of the poignant anecdotal examples she collected and her analysis was always fair and thorough. I felt I learned a lot from the book and will follow this author closely.

Wow, everyone 13 and older needs to read this review

We’ve been conned. Sold a lie. It’s so obvious but rich men have convinced us that exploiting women through sex work and sex culture, is better women. It not. It’s much much worse for women and a lot of us men need to learn discipline and exercise control.

I agreed with the central thesis but not much else

I deeply agree with the core sentiment that sexual liberation has not freed all of us it has freed some of us and selectively and the unforeseen price is a world that while great for women in many ways is also the kind of world that has played into the wants and desires of men in ways that harm us deeply however I did not agree with most of the sun theses used to support this overarching argument.

Additionally the book comes across as judgey, preachy and and more proscriptive than prescriptive. I strongly recommend Rethinking Sex: A Provocation by Christine Emba which has a similar core thesis but is delivered in a much more effective and engaging way.

Listen to the last 5 minutes

A repetitive moral diatribe against porn and violence in general. Summary: Porn is morally questionable, violence is bad. Men are pigs and women capitalize on this to their own detriment. Don’t sleep around, avoid porn, get into a committed relationship. Save your time and money.
