A sign reading “Jesus Saves” could be seen standing near a crude gallows erected to hang Vice President Mike Pence and other lawmakers who had betrayed Donald Trump by failing to overturn the presidential election. One man waved the flag of Israel above a sign that read, “Say Yes to Jesus”. “Shout if you love Jesus!” someone in the crowd yelled. “Shout if you love Trump!” someone answered in response. Once inside the Capitol, the rioters prayed in the Senate chamber.
Throughout his presidency, Donald Trump sought to weaponize American Christianity and use it for his own political benefit.
