Description

In July of 1986, Greg LeMond stunned the sporting world by becoming the first American to win the Tour de France, the world's pre-eminent bicycle race, defeating French cycling legend Bernard Hinault. Nine months later, LeMond lay in a hospital bed, his life in peril after a hunting accident, his career as a bicycle racer seemingly over. And yet, barely two years after this crisis, LeMond mounted a comeback.

In 1989, he once again won the Tour - by the almost impossibly narrow margin of eight seconds over another French legend, Laurent Fignon. It remains the closest Tour de France in history. The Comeback chronicles the life of this great American athlete, from his roots in Nevada and California to the heights of global fame.

With the kind of narrative drive that propels books like Moneyball and a fierce attention to detail, Daniel de Vise reveals the dramatic, ultra-competitive inner world of a sport rarely glimpsed up close, building a compelling case for LeMond as its great American hero.

Epic Comeback

I was born in the late 90s so I only ever heard of Lance Armstrong when I watched cycling but the true hero of the sport is Greg Lemond. There are so many great stories in this book it is very much worth every penny. Also the narration is great even if his French was quite bad haha.

IF ONLY,

IF ONLY the reader knew about the pronunciation of the cycling world.

I WOULD have given a 5 on all but could not.

The story written by de Vise is phenomenally well written, is insight and story telling is magic. I recommend this book to be read by all cyclist alive and plunge back with the author and your hown memories.

I Saw each image displayed that were written here and now. My idol on a bike with Sean KELLY!

I PROBABLY Hate Hinault more than Greg, at the time and even today!

The reader's "Guiro" is stupedly repeated all across this reading without any one corrected him.
OTHER annoyance to be discovered.

Outstanding

I am a cycling fanatic. I read cycling books that come out by every bike star who’s ever written a book. And this by far is the best one I’ve read yet. Absolutely amazing. It gives you the history of Gregg but also gives you the history of Lance Armstrong , Floyd Landis, Tyler Hamilton and all of the famous situations that surrounded the 1990s and early 2000‘s drug problems. Just so engaging -
This book is second to none. Truly love this book and would recommend it to anyone including people who are not cyclists. It’s a lesson in success and it’s a lesson in staying true to your goals
Motivating and fascinating all in one book
10/10!

Quite good

Overall I liked this book, though the author’s use of phrasing such as “pathetically fell” vs simply “fell” when describing one of Greg’s falls was off putting. Plus stating he’s lost a World Championship to “a Belgian” without stating the name was lazy and felt disrespectful.
The narration was mostly ok, but why he could pronounce Giro d’Italia correctly, but not Giro was baffling and became annoying.
Still, worth a listen.
