Description

When George Abbershaw is invited to Black Dudley Manor for the weekend, he has only one thing on his mind - proposing to Meggie Oliphant. Unfortunately for George, things don't quite go according to plan. A harmless game turns decidedly deadly and suspicions of murder take precedence over matrimony. Trapped in a remote country house with a murderer, George can see no way out. But Albert Campion can.

About the author: Margery Allingham was born in London in 1904. Her first novel was published when she was 17. In 1929 she published The Crime at Black Dudley and introduced the character who was to become the hallmark of her writing - Albert Campion.

I loved this book

I'm so glad to have found these books by Marjorie Allingham - brilliantly narrated by David Thorpe. I've worked my way through all of the Agatha Christie, Dorothy L. Sayers and P.D. James offered through Audible when I stumbled across this book. The writing sparkles with wit and intelligence and David Thorpe brings all the characters into lively focus. if you enjoy Agatha Christie and Dorothy L. Sayers I think it's a good bet you'll love these books too.

Fun listen

I enjoyed the introduction to Campion. As other reviewers note it really isn't a Campion story but is a good introduction to his character. Many have disliked the narrator due to the way Campion is portrayed - somewhat as a Bertie Wooster type. This is a bit unfair in my opinion as the narrator has only followed the author's description (as opposed to Peter Davidson's rendition on TV), however, I do understand - it can be irritating when one has already made a picture in one's mind.

Waste of 5 hours

I listened to the end because of David Thorpe. I kept hoping it would get better. It didn’t.
