Description

Savaged by the K'Chain Nah'Ruk, the Bonehunters march for Kolanse, where waits an unknown fate. Tormented by questions, the army totters on the edge of mutiny, but Adjunct Tavore will not relent. One final act remains, if it is in her power, if she can hold her army together, if the shaky allegiances she has forged can survive all that is to come. A woman with no gifts of magic, deemed plain, unprepossessing, displaying nothing to instill loyalty or confidence, Tavore Paran of House Paran means to challenge the gods - if her own troops don't kill her first.

Awaiting Tavore and her allies are the Forkrul Assail, the final arbiters of humanity. Drawing upon an alien power terrible in its magnitude, they seek to cleanse the world, to annihilate every human, every civilization, in order to begin anew. They welcome the coming conflagration of slaughter, for it shall be of their own devising, and it pleases them to know that, in the midst of the enemies gathering against them, there shall be betrayal.

In the realm of Kurald Galain, home to the long-lost city of Kharkanas, a mass of refugees stand upon the First Shore. Commanded by Yedan Derryg, the Watch, they await the breaching of Lightfall and the coming of the Tiste Liosan. This is a war they cannot win, and they will die in the name of an empty city and a queen with no subjects.

Elsewhere, the three Elder Gods, Kilmandaros, Errastas, and Sechul Lath, work to shatter the chains binding Korabas, the Otataral Dragon, from her eternal prison. Once freed, she will rise as a force of devastation, and against her no mortal can stand. At the Gates of Starvald Demelain, the Azath House sealing the portal is dying. Soon will come the Eleint, and once more, there will be dragons in the world.

So sad it's over

Great series, highly suggest to any fantasy fan. A highly complex but wonderfully woven tale.

Excellent

Book 10 is a truly worthy ending for what is arguably the best series in the epic fantasy genre. Erikson actually did a good job of wrapping up the numerous different character stories, and in ways that never felt forced nor distracted from the fast-paced conclusion. If you ever began to doubt the complexity of the world Erikson created, book 10 is a good reminder. It touches on so many prior characters and plot lines that it at times felt like an avalanche of memories, but never so overwhelming to be anything but spectacular. How Erikson could conceive of such a complex tale, and then keep all of the plot lines straight through 10 massive books, is a feat that leaves me dumbstruck with awe.

The Capstone to the Epic Masterpiece

My hopes were riding on a strong end to what must surely be the most epic fantasy saga ever written, and I can say this: This book was freaking awesome.

This is the culmination of all the time and effort, and so many of scenes were simply beautiful to behold. After 3 1/2 million words, Erikson had well-earned the tears that came to my eyes.

As it should be, the battles in this book are some of the most epic in all of the series, and in all of epic fantasy, by far. So many moments of awesome - events foreshadowed seven books and thousands of pages ago finally come to fruition. Moments where you just want to cheer or laugh as eyes tear up - scenes so deep and evoking that few works of fiction can compete with - this is a masterpiece.

As hard at it must have been to properly end this series and tie everything together, Erikson does it and makes it look so natural This book is the capstone to a storyline unequalled (to my knowledge) in epic fantasy. In a real sense, this book brings the entire series into its proper perspective. I never thought it could morph into such a touching story of hope, love and compassion, but it does. And the characters - so many of which started out feeling vague and unknowable - are now cemented into my mind, their own personal stories and struggles pulling at my own heartstrings.

If you've stuck it out this long, then this final book delivers the payoff and the satisfaction that you wanted. Not every loose end is tied up, of course, but we can hope for more perhaps in the future.

Here, we come to the end

Steven Erickson has left so many images and scenes burnes in my mind. The fall of Coltain (sp?), the fall of Pale, the fiery death trap set by Leoman (sp?), and of course all that Quick Ben does. If you're debating reading this book after reading all others in the series then, I can't help you. Of course you'll like it, assuming you've invested time in the previous books... There are many battles and many hardships with a touch of what should now be familiar humor.

The narration is superb. This is an intense series that usually requires a couple run throughs to fully grasp. This author promises dragons and actually delivers (unlike some authors).

best book of the series

The 9th book "dust of dreams" was very hard too get through. I almost gave up. I'm glad I didn't. The final book of the malazan was the best. Action packed and clever.

A worthy ending to an amazing series

After so long, it's hard to believe the author could pull this off. The journey was joy, and the ending fully resolved things. Bravo!

An amazing finish to a series. I wept real human tears at the end, several times.

As the sun sets...

This book marks the end of a long ride. At times I wondered if it was worth all the dust along the way, all the broken disjointed pieces scattered along the trail, trying to make sense of them. This book finally glues them all back together and washes away the dust in a long awaited cool drink that leaves me with a warm satisfied glow inside.

note to the author: You sir have a deeply disturbed mind, twisted in it's complexity beyond what we mostly all suffer. None the less I'm deeply gratified for this glimpse into your personal form of madness, the thoughts you've provoked in me will likely haunt the rest of my days. And after all is that not the best a teller of tales can aspire to?

All 10 books confusing

I’ve now listened to all the books and still I feel confused. I lived on the hope that I would really figure all the characters but I only got a some of them. Luckily those survived. This is a series where hopefully the books have all the characters explained in the back of the book so the reader can follow. As an audible book it has just been too confusing. Maybe it’s partially the fault of the reader as some of the female characters sound like men and the character names are also at times confusing. I’m glad I stuck to the series but I won’t revisit
