Shortlisted for the VN Thriller of the Year 2022

LONGLISTED FOR THE CWA GOLD DAGGER

It's Christmas and a serial killer is leaving displayed body parts all over Cumbria. A strange message is left at each scene: #BSC6

Called in to investigate, the National Crime Agency's Washington Poe and Tilly Bradshaw are faced with a case that makes no sense. Why were some victims anaesthetized, while others died in appalling agony? Why is their only suspect denying what they can irrefutably prove but admitting to things they weren't even aware of? And why did the victims all take the same two weeks off work three years earlier?

And when a disgraced FBI agent gets in touch things take an even darker turn. Because she doesn't think Poe is dealing with a serial killer at all; she thinks he's dealing with someone far, far worse - a man who calls himself the Curator.

And nothing will ever be the same again . . .

excellent narrator

(First, credit to the wonderful narrator. Seriously top of the line.)
4.5, I really enjoyed this book and I am so glad I came across this series. Consistently solid, entertaining mysteries with a cast of well-developed, sympathetic characters that I feel like I've known for way more than just three books. Even Tilly has grown on me, her weird mannerisms feeling less forced and more natural.
Somewhere in the early part of the book, Poe exclaims that he hates killers who have a gimmick. I laughed at that a bit, because I love it, and MW Craven never disappoints on the weird gimmick front. This one was particularly good, because there was the primary killer and then a sort of behind the scenes plot that was very satisfying (if a bit predictable. Somehow you kind of have a feeling fairly early on, but think, nah, that'd be a bit much, wouldn't it? And then boom, turns out...)
There's not much more to say, really. Great book, great fun, and an enticing set up at the end for the next installment!
