Follows standard tropes of this genre. Male heroes are military and survivalist, and the women are nearly helpless.
Hero claims to be the moral authority, but seems to be nothing more than a gun toting scared man, afraid of everyone around him.

I am enjoying this series thus far...having said that, I wish there were more action and/or tense moments. The narration is very good and helps me envision the environment and scenes by holding me interest.

I am on book 12. No spoilers below as nothing changes. Still big road trip with battles. Lucky all books are included with my membership or I would not buy them. 90% of POV is Ben and he is CONSTANTLY stressing about them driving far enough, what route, need gas, water etc. Happy to report that the women are gradually allowed to show their intelligence and competence.

book one is the setting and the other "books" that follow should be chapters. I'm glad it was in a collection but buying so many "books" to learn about the trip back to collorado makes me feel scammed. I like how practical the solutions and challenges are. the story is very plausible. the story moves along a little slow. I suppose I wouldn't mind the extra detail or internal thought narratives but because I have to buy each chapter separately I'm annoyed by it
