À propos de cet audio

Ishmael Jones is someone who can't afford to be noticed, someone who lives under the radar, who drives on the dark side of the road. He's employed to search out secrets, investigate mysteries and shine a light in dark places. Sometimes he kills people.

Invited by his employer, the enigmatic Colonel, to join him and his family for Christmas, Ishmael arrives at the grand but isolated Belcourt Manor in the midst of a blizzard to find that the Colonel has mysteriously disappeared. As he questions his fellow guests, Ishmael concludes that at least one of them - not least Ishmael himself - is harboring a dangerous secret, and that beneath the veneer of festive cheer lurk passion, jealousy, resentment and betrayal.

As a storm sets in, sealing off the Manor from the rest of the world, Ishmael must unmask a ruthless murderer before they strike again.

Fun murder mystery style story plus paranormal components (and more violence than Miss Marple ever encountered). The main character is interesting and I look forward to continuing the series!

Agatha Christie Meets Paranormal

Stop reading reviews and just download it. If you are a fan of the classic mystery setup of a group of interesting characters trapped together trying to work out who the murderer is then you will like this book. Great narration as well.

Loved it

I'm a huge fan of Simon R. Green, so I was expecting a lot from this book and I was not disappointed! His usual humour was present, along with compelling characters, and a well defined plot. Gildart Jackson's performance was phenomenal! His ability to alter his voice to portray all of the various characters so that you could tell all the characters apart was truly exceptional, especially as many narrators/voice performers in my experience lack this talent. I will definitely be listening to more Ishmael Jones mysteries in the future!

Great Supernatural Mystery Performed Wonderfully!

I was a little hesitant to downloaded it due to the mixed reviews. But as it was a free one, I gave it a chance. I am so glad I did!
If you like supernatural and murder mysteries, this is well worth a listen.
I’ve already downloaded the second one!

Give it a chance!

Enigmatic "Agent" Ishmael Jones is invited to a Christmas event by his supervisor at 'The Organization'.. soon finding himself enmeshed in a classic Murder Mystery [a sleuth surrounded by interesting 'Clue'-styled characters in an isolated setting (a snowed-in half-abandoned Manor House this time). Yes, essentially the butler finds Colonel Mustard killed with a wrench in the Drawing Room. It then morphs into an undead monster story.
The tropes are overly-familiar but handled capably, Simon R. Green's dialogue & characterization are loaded with fun-loving humor, and the Ishmael Jones character - an Alien in disguise - is original.. but the book didn't blow me away (even after it turned into a rollercoaster-ride supernatural tale).

Likewise above-average but unspectacular: the reading performance from Gildart Jackson. His diction, timbre, and cadence are outstanding and his semi-jocular tone is pitch-perfect for the offered text.. but I found the voice-acting hit & miss: distinctive and performed well but too often cartoonish.

Altogether, 'The Dark Side Of The Road' is a 7/10 star old-school Whodunit with paranormal twists delivered with tongue-in-cheek flair. It was a great distraction for free.. but there are better options available for your Credit when they ask for one.

Quirky Story

Felt like the storyline was made up as it was written. Some humourous lines and the narrator is excellent, but the story was very weak.

Amateur

Starts out as an intriguing English-country-house-mystery with a novel twist right up front, then descends into improbable madness. Needless destruction. Inconsistent super-powers. Stupid decisions by major characters. Wildly unrealistic emotional responses to gory deaths of family members. A story not even Gildart Jackson can make worthwhile.

Good Beginning, Rapid Decline

Tedious is a good word. But not quite right. Humm…ah, there it is. Goop.

Started off ok..then tedious. Kept listening, hopeful, then bored.
