On a brisk autumn day, a 13-year-old boy stands on the shores of the gray Atlantic, near a silent amusement park and a fading ocean resort called the Alhambra. The past has driven Jack Sawyer here: His father is gone, his mother is dying, and the world no longer makes sense. But for Jack everything is about to change. For he has been chosen to make a journey back across America - and into another realm. One of the most influential and heralded works of fantasy ever written, The Talisman is an extraordinary novel of loyalty, awakening, terror, and mystery.

On November 22, 1963, three shots rang out in Dallas, President Kennedy died, and the world changed. What if you could change it back? In this brilliantly conceived tour de force, Stephen King - who has absorbed the social, political, and popular culture of his generation more imaginatively and thoroughly than any other writer - takes listeners on an incredible journey into the past and the possibility of altering it.

Welcome to Derry, Maine. It’s a small city, a place as hauntingly familiar as your own hometown. Only in Derry the haunting is real. They were seven teenagers when they first stumbled upon the horror. Now they are grown-up men and women who have gone out into the big world to gain success and happiness. But the promise they made 28 years ago calls them reunite in the same place where, as teenagers, they battled an evil creature that preyed on the city’s children.

On an entirely normal, beautiful fall day in Chester's Mill, Maine, the town is inexplicably and suddenly sealed off from the rest of the world by an invisible force field. Planes crash into it and fall from the sky in flaming wreckage, a gardener's hand is severed as "the dome" comes down on it, people running errands in the neighboring town are divided from their families, and cars explode on impact. No one can fathom what this barrier is, where it came from, and when - or if - it will go away.

Leland Gaunt opens a new shop in Castle Rock called Needful Things. Anyone who enters his store finds the object of his or her lifelong dreams and desires: a prized baseball card, a healing amulet. In addition to a token payment, Gaunt requests that each person perform a little "deed", usually a seemingly innocent prank played on someone else from town. These practical jokes cascade out of control, and soon the entire town is doing battle with itself. Only Sheriff Alan Pangborn suspects that Gaunt is behind the population's increasingly violent behavior.

Leaps better than Book 1
I have to admit I really struggled with the Gunslinger (I read it, I didn't do an audio book). Many people have told me that this series was great and after that first book I wasn't too interested. Well I finally gave this book a try and now I am completely invested in the series. So if you struggled with the first book like me, just stick with it, it gets so much more interesting.
The reader, Frank Muller, was great as well. A perfect voice for Roland.

Good story, poor sound quality
I loved the story but I had a problem with the recording quality itself. There is a consistant static in the background that cuts out every time they edited two recordings together. I didn't notice it in the car when I was driving but when I had headphones in it was very annoying. The performance was fantastic but who ever set up the recording booth must have goofed up.

I have read the Dark Tower series once. I’m now listening to the entire. It had been years since I have read this book and it is every bit as I remembered. It’s so much fun enjoying it in audiobook form.

Revisiting
Revisiting this series after they were originally written. Having the audio gives it new life! Although the narrator is absolutely amazing, he makes Roland sound like he’s reading a movie trailer. Must be the direction he was given because I’ve heard other of his narrations and it wasn’t this exaggerated.

Fantastic and excellent performance
Excellent narration. My only gripe is that the mixing needs work. The audio can spike at points. The excellent performance deserved better, but it doesn't ruin the experience. You just won't want the volume too high
