À propos de cet audio

A new edition of this award-winning modern classic, with a new introduction

In 1958 Georgia, the shade of a 13-year-old black girl's skin can make the difference in her fate. Tangy Mae is the smartest of her mother's 10 children, but she is also the darkest complected. The Quinns - all different skin shades, all with unknown fathers - live with their charismatic, beautiful, and tyrannical mother, Rozelle, in poverty on the fringes of a Georgia town where Jim Crow rules.

Rozelle's children live in fear of her mood swings and her violence, but they are devoted to her. Rozelle pulls her children out of school when they are 12 years old so that they can help support her by going to work - as domestics, as field laborers, or down at "the farmhouse", where Rozelle takes her oldest daughters to turn tricks for her.

Tangy Mae has been offered the opportunity to apply to an integrated high school and might even have the chance to graduate if she can somehow avoid her sisters' fate. Can she break from Rozelle's grasp without violent - even fatal - consequences?

This book was a master peice, although it was hard to listen to as some of these situations do mirror real-life events. Given all the heartbreaking content that literally seems to never cease for the Quinn family over the years , the details of people, places, and the time were written so well. The narrator on audible hit this right on the money with her ability to differentiate between characters & accents.

The dynamics of the family, how terrible the mother was to her children. Growing up in poverty with racism rampant, surviving all forms of abusive; A household just trying to survive. The 10 Quinn children endured incidents that no children should, making parts very hard to listen to - but regardless of their hardships, they continue to live the best they know how while tiptoeing toeing around their mother. They are all so diverse in terms of personality, always sticking together until each slowly reached their breaking point or moving away. I give them all the credit to their strength and resilience.

If you're looking for a book/audio book that will pull you in and keep you captivated throughout the time, this is it. Be warned there are a lot of trigger warnings, I can not express that enough.

Loved this book. I would love to hear that someone took over where the author left off and give us an end to the sequel.

Sad to hear about the author's passing.

The narrator is incredible. The dialect, voices, emotion, and skill she possesses has the listener sitting right in the midst of the Quinn family.
The storyline is heartbreaking and accurate. I will be so sad to see this end and will seek out this narrator. I hope there's more.

Impossible to put down

This story is narrated so cleverly by Bahni Turpin, who gives each character in the book a different voice. This makes the dialogue come to life and feels almost like you are listening to a radio play. I loved all her tones and inflections and her smooth vocal style. The writing by Delores Phillips is so well crafted and succinct, in that the descriptions of situations and characters traits truly set the scene. Without long, unnecessary and excessive wording, a fascinating, intriguing portrayal of characters and their lives becomes part of you, and you are there in the story, feeling what they feel. Surprising, emotional, and gripping at times, the writer reveals the the way African Americans of that decade were treated and how this shaped their lives. Excellent reading!

Absolutely Outstanding!
