When Andrew stumbles upon Jamie’s house, he’s injured, starved, and has nothing left to lose. A deadly pathogen has killed off most of the world’s population, including everyone both boys have ever loved. And if this new world has taught them anything, it’s to be scared of what other desperate people will do . . . so why does it seem so easy for them to trust each other? After danger breaches their shelter, they flee south in search of civilization. But something isn’t adding up about Andrew’s story, and it could cost them everything.

Born under different stars, Protestant Mungo and Catholic James live in a hyper-masculine world. They are caught between two of Glasgow’s housing estates where young working-class men divide themselves along sectarian lines, and fight territorial battles for the sake of reputation. They should be sworn enemies if they’re to be seen as men at all, and yet they become best friends as they find a sanctuary in the dovecote that James has built for his prize racing pigeons.

Arek hadn’t thought much about what would happen after he completed the prophecy that said he was destined to save the Kingdom of Ere from its evil ruler. So now that he’s finally managed to (somewhat clumsily) behead the evil king (turns out magical swords yanked from bogs don’t come pre-sharpened), he and his rag-tag group of quest companions are at a bit of a loss for what to do next. As a temporary safeguard, Arek’s best friend and mage, Matt, convinces him to assume the throne until the true heir can be rescued from her tower. Except that she’s dead.

Cutthroat political consultant Thom Morgan is thriving, working on the governor of California’s presidential campaign. If only he didn’t have to deal with Clay Parker, the infuriatingly smug data analyst who gets under Thom’s skin like it’s his job. In the midst of one of their heated and very public arguments, a journalist snaps a photo, but the image makes it look like they’re kissing. As if that weren’t already worst-nightmare territory, the photo goes viral—and in a bid to secure the liberal vote, the governor asks them to lean into it. Hard.

Description
They Both Die at the End meets The Loneliest Girl in the Universe in this mind-bending sci-fi mystery and tender love story about two boys aboard a spaceship sent on a rescue mission, from two-time National Book Award finalist Eliot Schrefer. Stonewall Honor Award winner!
Two boys, alone in space. Sworn enemies sent on the same rescue mission.
Ambrose wakes up on the Coordinated Endeavor with no memory of a launch. There’s more that doesn’t add up: evidence indicates strangers have been on board, the ship’s operating system is voiced by his mother, and his handsome, brooding shipmate has barricaded himself away. But nothing will stop Ambrose from making his mission succeed—not when he’s rescuing his own sister.
In order to survive the ship’s secrets, Ambrose and Kodiak will need to work together and learn to trust each other . . . especially once they discover what they are truly up against. Love might be the only way to survive.

It was an easy listen! Easy to get into and it held my attention throughout. It has romance, but that’s not even what held me to the story. There was always something happening and the story always felt like it was moving along. You won’t regret buying this one!

Whoa. I had no idea what I was in for.
Ok, this book is not YA. I genuinely feel more impacted by reading this book than I have by any other novel in a while. It's a top-notch Sci-Fi, with very little YA content other than the literal ages of the characters. You'll have a moment at the beginning where you feel like it's YA and that maybe the voice actor isn't as good as everyone says, but trust me, James Fouhey is wonderful, and the book will get wildly more excellent and more complicated. The themes are very mature. Like... contemplate your whole life and the complexities of human existence, the constructs of civilization, and the meaning of love, mature. For those who say the romance in the book runs sidecar to a larger story, that's only true in the sense that the actual larger story is SO DARN LARGE. In another respect, the romance is literally the thing that every part of the plot hinges on, and the only reason you feel genuine joy and hope at the end of what's really a very intense book.
Highly recommend reading it, but please don't have the expectation that you're walking into a fluffy sweet story. Worth it, I promise, but whew. Give yourself a little space to ruminate on these themes.

Reinvigorated my love of reading!
I think what I liked most about this book is that I wasn’t just waiting for them to get together, I was so invested in finding out why they were in space alone together that honestly I wouldn’t have been mad if they stayed friends. I was hanging onto every word and there honestly wasn’t a dull moment and as the twist slowly unraveled I was truly shocked! With that, the progression of their relationship was fairly natural and didn’t feel out of place at all.
Furthermore the narration was superb, I was amazed at the different voices and accents the narrator was able to accomplish and so smoothly! Each character felt like distinct people with true emotions. Outstanding.

For all the high reviews, I expected more
I don't know where to go with this one. I don't want to offer any spoilers, so all I feel comfortable saying is there are issues with the story that still nag at me a couple of months after reading. The Cold War style premise should seem a bit off, but with the reality of current events, I will let it go.
The narration is fine - there aren't many characters to voice, and it works.
There are two huge issues for me, and without trying to spoil anything, I will say the timeframe of the book is wildly unbelievable. With nods to 2001: A Space Odyssey, the material should be accessible to most readers. The twists this book takes seem unnecessary. The romantic aspects are fine, but as you get further in the story it seems less likely that is would happen. Ultimately, I took the approach that I had to accept the broader concept as presented and not question it to appreciate the story the author was trying to tell. I would say it is recommended if you appreciate sci- fi with a gay twist.

Top 5 favorite of 2021!
Excuse me, James Fouhey. Who are you? Because your narration was incredible! I absolutely loved it and I have to recommend listening to this book over reading it. Chef's kiss!
This book is a plot-focused sci fi with a little strangers/enemies to lovers romance thrown in. This is definitely my kind of science fiction story. I loved it! I figured some things out fairly quickly, and had an idea of where the story was going, but the journey that the author took us on was plenty interesting. I also got a little emotional at parts because I was so invested in the main characters. Note that there is a romance and it’s all fade-to-black, which I personally didn’t mind because the story is so plot focused.

A bad collage of story sampling
I am still flabbergasted by the myriad of positive reviews on this book. It’s shocking that this many people have not read the classics, and they all have a watered-down idealistic idea about gay love.
Part One is blatantly plagiarizing Space Odyssey 2001. Part Two was better executed in the movie Moon. Part 3 is a smoothie of many other movies but by this point I lost interest due to lack of originality.
And why is this book described as YA? YA is typically about first love, coming of age and the problems of facing the world without the sheltering aspect of the home left behind. This story is about two seventeen-year-old guys because at this age you have less chance to develop cancer (very scientific). Anyhow, these two guys live their life and execute their task with the knowledge and maturity of men in their 30’s or 40’s. They admittedly have bucket full of sexual experience already (at the age of 17???) albeit displaying the sexual initiative of retired men in assisted living. Honestly, two heterosexual drunken fraternity brothers do more than these two locked up in a space ship without supervision. You can’t call their love slow brewing because with this speed milk would get spoiled in their mouth before they even consider swallowing it. At one point the semi homophobic dude admits to the openly gay guy that he’d prefer him over his sister. On planet Earth, if this confession would take place, even on Antarctica in a blizzard, the two would be naked in less than five seconds. Guess what the gay guy’s reply is on the space ship: Oh, that’s nice! Yeah, try not to laugh, there is more chance that Dolly Parton’s boobs are real than this scenario. Also, there is a sex scene but you can’t even call it watered down vanilla because that would require a drop of vanilla. It reminded me of an 80’s PG13 movie where the scene of pulling down a zipper is cut to the having breakfast together next morning.
Then there is the problem with character development. They are paper mache thin. One is from the pinnacles of aristocracy the other is from an orphanage and there is a chasm of ideology and political affinity between them. Luckily, they are gay so it is easy for them to find each other attractive for their looks and bulging muscles. No need to dig deeper. But to give their character some kind of anchor the author made a list of character traits and instead of making a story about them he just wrote them out in a sentence or two. Like having a scar on the skin as a result of betraying the best friend and first love. Yep, it is basically written like that, just as a matter of fact without making the character actually showing any remorse. This event doesn’t seem to have a psychological impact on his personality or results in any residual behavior consequence. He just simply questions its necessity later (crying - to make it believable) just so the author can show his humanity.
And finally, I had a problem with the complete lack of science and many times: logic.
There is mentioning of high-def, bigger-than life monitors, an assisting robot and some things on life support I don’t want to get into to avoid spoiling the story for those who want to suffer it. But it’s worth pointing out that these things are located at the portion of the ship that is not shielded from radiation to discourage human to enter it. So how come those “things” are not destroyed by radiation?????????
But what bothered me the most is the anthropomorphic computer OS. It becomes blonde. When re-awakened it expresses its surprise about seeing one of the guys who it believed is dead and two sentences later it proceeds explaining why he is not. I had to go back to listen to this part again to see if I missed some explanation but there is none.
This could have been a better story if it was about two regular straight guys who find themselves in a puzzle while trying to carry on with life in a hopeless situation during which they start to develop emotions for each other - potentially for their personality not for their muscles. This affection then could bursts into unexpected love for an unexpected outcome of their mission.
Instead we have two seemingly sterilized seventeen-year-old whose balls are obviously not developing any testosterone so they succumb to visually salivate on the others bulging body without even considering to approach each other while reenacting scenes from classic movies that have been done better before.

Excellent
I really wasn’t expecting the range of emotions this book was going to bring me through. A very well written story, and a great adventure of both self reflection and exploration. The narrator was excellent.
