Description

At 15, Chance Fortunato has seen more evil than most people ever will. Indentured by his father to the demon count Dulka, he's been taught dark magic and forced to do his infernal master's dirty work for eight years. But now Chance has figured out a way to defeat his master and free himself.

His new life with his mother and sister is far from easy, and freedom has its own perils. Normal life is hard enough, but even in a mundane-looking high school, there are paranormal threats from both sides of the mystical fence.

When his new mentor is murdered, Chance knows he is the only one who can track the killer down. To bring his mentor's killer to justice, Chance will have to fight evil on its own terms and discover if that makes him a hero...or a monster.

Clearly Aimed at Emo-Goth Misfits

If you have a 14-year-old who wears black fingernail polish, has an interest in the occult, listens to "horrible" dark music, and hangs out with fringey losers - but that you're convinced secretly harbors a "Heart of Gold" - this book is for them.
Ben Reeder writes capably enough - using creditable vocabulary & prose to deliver a reasonably well-conceived and well-executed (if a little heavy on stereotypes) YA Fantasy story - but some of the dark magic tropes prompt some serious eyerolling. Magic-laced tattoos; spells with "Latin Phrasing" (let's be honest: Latin Gibberish); Aura reading and "Third Eye" examinations; Magic Circles, Pentacles, Crystals, Demons, Mages, and Fae - Reeder's story is overloaded with hilariously clichéd ideas of what people think Wiccans do.. at the same time portraying the protagonist (a 15-year-old Warlock named 'Chance Fortunado' - I'm not kidding) as a family-loving moral-ethical role model for aggrieved/"victimized" teens everywhere.
Don't get me wrong - even though the mistreated/misunderstood heroic teen thing is waaaaay overdone and it's often pretty bad.. this recording isn't horrible.

Fortuitously, for example, Blackstone Audio hired Charlie Thurston to do the narration. His diction, cadence, pacing, and tone are spot-on. Some of the voice-acting - including an awful cartoonish lisping caricature of a child's voice when reading Chance as a little kid - is legitimately cringeworthy.. but the performance is otherwise truly outstanding.

"More Than Decent" production standards can't save this 5/10 star offering, however.
I'm a rabid consumer of audiobooks (check out my Listener Profile) - and YA Fantasy Books are among the genres that I enjoy. This one was included with my subscription as a 'Plus' selection - so I thought "Why Not?" and decided to take a chance.
'The Demon's Apprentice' wasn't a complete waste of time at that price (free), I suppose. Should they ask for a Credit, however, don't bother.
