À propos de cet audio

Banished for the murder of his master, a lone Astronomer has set out to deliver a written history of his School to the ancient city of Calrathia, home of all knowledge. None have attempted to cross the frozen wastes in three centuries. And in the bitter cold, worse things than scavengers haunt the desolate trek.

Young paints a vivid picture of a world in decline, a massive wall stands guard against an endless winter, ancient technology akin to magic hiding in every ruin, inhuman monsters and powers beyond reckoning interfering in our hero's Odyssey. Despite wearing his inspirations on his sleeve Young's earnesty is endearing, he has a story to tell with ideas he wants to convey, none of the reader's time is wasted. Reading(listening) this felt like a callback to American classics like The Belgariad, a refreshing break from the modern trend of cynicism and 50 shades of moral grey. The story is told in retrospect, a style quickly becoming Young's staple. While this removes any immediate danger for the protagonist, it cleverly allows the narrator to pause the action and explain the nuances of this sci-fantasy adventure to the audience. It’s a bold choice that Young leans into with growing confidence.

Finally, I must praise Son of Sonnet’s narration. My first introduction to him was through Young's ongoing The Last Human, and his work here proves that his quality is no fluke. Characters are varied, with enunciation, tone, and inflection used effectively to bring the cast to life. I firmly believe Son is a talent many writers are sleeping on and look forward to his future endeavors.

Great writing. Amazing narration.
