Description

Love is a luxury he can't afford . . .

For years, he was known only as Blackrose's Blade, an elite assassin in the employ of the Crown. But after a mission cost him the use of his leg, Rourke Lindsay has unexpectedly inherited a dukedom . . . and along with it, the headache of a pair of hellion twins. Now, he's in dire need of a miracle.

He just didn't expect her to be quite so tempting.

Needing a safe place to hide, Miss Sophia Cuny has forged her references and settled into the Duke of Exingham's employ, unwilling to admit she knows next to nothing about children. She does, however, know all about the Duke's painful past and why the cynical warrior refuses to allow himself close to a pair of rapscallion troublemakers, no matter how desperately they need his love.

The longer she tries to avoid the new duke, the more she sees the man beneath the scars—the man who needs love as well—even if he's unwilling to admit it. Too bad she can't afford to allow him into her heart, even as the danger she's running from closes in.

Because Sophia possesses secrets about his past even Rourke doesn't know, and revealing the truth will ruin them all.

Contains mature themes.

Profoundly emotional, tender relationships, beautiful craftsmanship of words

It can be difficult to find anything surprising or refreshing after reading one genre for a long time, but the author did just that for me by her study of human behaviour. The subtle details of her observations gave me so many “Aha” moments. So much so that I saw a big gaping hole in other well-known works. And that’s saying something considering I just retired from a career of analyzing mental and physical behaviours of homo sapiens. While others paint with small paintbrushes, Caroline Lee uses her pinkie nail for her craft.

As funny as this book is, this story is pretty darn serious about two kinds of love–Love between a man and a woman, love between children and their caretakers. One chapter is solely devoted to illustrating how tenderly Rourke cares for his ward even though he may not have realized it. Every detail was touching.

Some chapters may feel slow, but let the words wash over you. Take your time and savour it because not a word was excessive and not a thought or gesture, was in vain. This book had some of the most heartwarming moments, delivered effortlessly like water over river rocks. But when there was passion, it exploded without holding anything back. And whoa, it left me dizzy, surprised, and delighted. I felt every stroke, every caress, and every heat the characters shared. Meaning… you know what I mean.

Alas, no book and no person are perfect, so I must point out the shortcomings. My main complaint about this book is that the man on the cover is wearing pants. Secondly, the woman on the cover is not me.
